Todayโs project started as a simple idea:
โWhat if we used that crazy gold leaf candy effect in a real paint job?โ
That idea quickly spiraled into two straight days of experimentation, vinyl stencils, peeling gold leaf disasters, improvised flame graphics, and a complete mid-project reset ๐
The victim this time is a heavily modified โ65 Mustang casting that honestly looked a little strange right from the beginning. But after a whole lot of trial and error, we finally landed on a wild black candy flame setup over hand-textured metal that ended up looking way cooler than the original plan.
This one definitely fought me every step of the way, but those are usually the projects that end up becoming the most memorable.

If you want to have gold, or silver, leafed flames you need to reverse the process. Paint the main color first. Then mask off to lay the flame masking over the main color. Apply the size (leaf glue) and let that dry. Leaf size stays open until you lay on the leaf. The longer you wait, the shinier the final leaf will be. Unmask and gently burnish the leaf, then clear over the whole car. You could spray a candy coat over the leaf while it's still masked off, then peel and clearcoat.
