Why The Entire Ocean is Terrified of Pilot Whales explores one of the ocean’s strangest rivalries: why even killer whales sometimes abandon hunts when pilot whales arrive.
In Why The Entire Ocean is Terrified of Pilot Whales, we uncover how enormous super-pods use aggressive mobbing, overwhelming numbers, and constant acoustic communication to pressure predators far stronger than any individual pilot whale.
Their greatest weapon isn’t teeth or raw strength—it’s unity. By moving and responding as a single group, pilot whales can turn even an apex predator’s hunt into a dangerous risk.
Ultimately, Why The Entire Ocean is Terrified of Pilot Whales reveals why, in the ocean, the strongest predator does not always control the battlefield.

If you think about it, the humpback whale that seems to be saving a seal from the Orcas is not a "hero". It's doing the same thing as a pilot whales. Orcas also feed on their calves so it's important to them to send the same message as the pilot whales, they're telling Orcas to stay away from me or I'll mess with your dinner.
Whales are NOT using a type of acoustical radar, that's called sonar. Sonar is merely acoustical detection and ranging with the same output as a radar, it's just a dimensionless BLIP, nothing else. The whales are actually SEEING with the same parts of the brain that we use to see, our optical cortex, which constructs a detailed 3D world with light rays detected by our eyes. They are just like BATS. They're not just locating prey, they are SEEING the world to navigate in 3D space just as we use out eyes to walk around obstacles.
That also means that while false killer whales may be OPTICALLY identical to a pilot whale to our visual sensors, since orcas don't SEE them with light like we do, they SEE with sound. So they aren't fooled at all by the visual similarity.
I have a biology and a chemistry degree ;-) so I think I can state these things with confidence.
"Wait but I'm the one..."
"With a delicious liver! And it's much appreciated!" 😮
I always thought that killer whales were the No1 predator, fascinating 👍
