Yes, it's easier to collect a smaller faction, but if your one good unit gets a rules rather than a point nerf, you might not have a viable army.
Skaven have so many ways to build a list, it's almost embarrassing. Rattling guns were strong, now rat ogres and the bell and plague furnace combo are strong but just getting together a huge swarm of rat infantry or monsters, or fast moving war machines or a mix of everything, it's still viable. It's one of a small number of armies that really can do it all.
Being able to just swap from endless hoard to gunline to monster mash, having a million tricks and options available makes them really good for a the whole edition
Both spearheads plus Thanquol plus 6 jezzails (proxys from Etsy for less than half the price) plus 1 box of rattlingguns, plus manifestations. Gnawholes i will build myself.
Probably not the most optimized list but its a good starting point for an acceptable amount of money
I fell in love with them because of Total War Warhammer 3 and I read some of the Gotrek and Felix books from the old world.
And Thanquol was directly my favourite.
After playing 5-8 rounds against a friend and my brother law (one has souls blights and one Flesh Eater) I can say that Skaven are not a beginner army.
With the knowledge of today I would not buy them first.
We had a tough time understanding all the rules and painting all.
And I still have to paint a lot.
I have Like 7000 points now. But thats the thing. It never ends with skaven.
The playstyle is not easy and I lost 95% of my matches so far because I really have problems to find some good armys. I mean now I have a better idea and a big variety to choose from. But that can be overwhelming when this is your first army. And thats not the best marketing from GW in my opinion.
But I also want to spread some love for the Skaven.
The models look amazing (except for the nightrunners who look like monkeys). I take my time to make them look grimdark, rusty, dirty and brutal.
Even if the mechanics are not that easy, its fun to give your warpblaster more energy and then he got blown away. For the imagination its totally fun. If you someone like me who gets salty when loosing, maybe its not the best army choice.
For new players I would recommend to concentrate on moulder first if you dont want some specific theme like Skryre or pestilens. Moulder units are currently the best I would say. In combination with units like the Ghyran screeming bell.
Overall Skavens are great.
For people who like building lists its a dream. For people who dont like big horde army painting - dont do it. You need two things: A lot of money and a lot of time to paint all that.
But if you have both, you will have a great time.
