Hi! I’m Suzuka! 😊
This is part 4 and the final episode of my Hokkaido series! This time, we’re talking about Hokkaido dialect ❄️
When people think of Hokkaido dialect, famous words like “namara” often come to mind.
But instead of making a dictionary-style list, I wanted to focus on words I actually use and expressions I genuinely thought were standard Japanese until I left Hokkaido.
In this episode, I talk about:
・Hokkaido words I still use all the time, like “waya,” “nashite,” “nanmo,” and “shitakke”
・Expressions you won’t find in textbooks, like “izui” and “-saru,” plus phrases like “tebukuro o haku” and “gomi o nageru” that I thought were standard Japanese
・Famous Hokkaido dialect words I personally don’t use very much & a Hokkaido dialect quiz at the end
I also share a few stories about accidentally using dialect while teaching Japanese.
⏰ Timestamps
00:00 Final Hokkaido episode! Hokkaido dialect
02:16 Hokkaido words I still use all the time
07:48 “Izui” and “-saru”: words with no perfect standard Japanese equivalent
13:09 Hokkaido expressions adults used on me as a kid
16:18 Words I thought were standard Japanese
22:31 Famous Hokkaido dialect words I rarely use
26:01 Hokkaido dialect quiz! How many can you get right?
28:19 Why Hokkaido and Tohoku share so many words
29:38 You don’t notice what feels “normal” until you leave
31:00 Does your country have dialects too? & goodbye to the Hokkaido series
Have you ever used a word for years thinking it was standard language, only to discover that it was actually dialect? 😳
If there’s a word that everyone uses in your hometown but people from other regions don’t understand, tell me in the comments!
This is also the final episode of my four-part Hokkaido series ❄️
Thank you so much for listening to all the episodes about Hokkaido travel, food, dialect, and more 😊
If you’re studying Japanese, try using this episode for listening practice and shadowing too.
