Robert Hansen of the FBI did the samething. Sold out to the Russians while head of the FBI counter intelligence dept. Was doing it for 20 years before being caught.

Oleg Gordievski's knowledge of Andropov's own personal nuclear threat assessment system actually helped the west a great deal. In the early 80s NATO were conducting quite provocative exercises in Eastern Europe, sabre rattling really. Andropov, dying of kidney failure and a veteran of Stalingrad, no less, was coming to genuinely believe a western nuclear attack was imminent and was increasingly likely to launch a preemptive attack. Gordievski got the info to the west and they backed off. Shortly after we started engaging in talks to reduce nuclear arsenals. We were unbelievably close to nuclear war.
