The trailing wire systems are for low and very low frequency radio communication equipment. The low frequency doesn’t have the best fidelity of communication, having very limited message lengths, but can put out very long wavelength signals, which can penetrate much deeper into water than high frequency signals, allowing communication to submerged submarines.

I worked the plane a few times as ATC and they would fly with the callsign 'ORDER66' in a star wars joke.

The snack-bar in the middle of court-yard of the Pentagon has been decorated with a Bullzye for decades. It's name; THE GROUND ZERO CAFE (since that IS where the bad guys WILL aim to kill military leadership)!

Thumbs up for Dr Strangelove reference

My Dad flew on this plane 1978-1986 as an Electronic Technician before retiring from Offutt.

I saw an E4 in San Antonio and tracked it via ADS-B. It's call sign was ORDER66 lol

Somewhat little known fact: in the middle of the Pentagon there is a coffee hut that's called the "Ground-Zero Cafe". Gotta love the combo of entrepreneurial spirit and gallows humor.

Can you imagine the billions of dollars that were probably spent on jet fuel JUST to keep those doomsday planes flying 24/7 during Project Looking glass? Pure budgetary insanity.

@timaustin5434 4 months ago

I worked in the looking glass. 135 crew chief

"Nuclear Buggary" would be a sick name for an avant garde metal band.

22:00 A Faraday Cage becomes a building block in the quantum age. A literally supermassive building block with a negligible mass.

Live next to Offutt AFB and see this thing flying around all the time. It’s pretty beastly

@ChrisZenner-b8j 4 months ago

Growing up in Waterloo Iowa, the E 4 would make regular visits to our local airport and do a few touch and goes before heading back to Offett AFB.

Used to be called National Emergency Airborne Command Post or NEACP , as the cold war wound down it was changed to National Airborne Operations Center or NAOC. It is a very beautiful plane to see fly. And also another tidbit, it does NOT say U.S. Air Force, it says United States of America. So as Simon had said, it is the flying doomsday or Flying Pentagon plane.

When Simon suggested the DC-10 I literally laughed out loud. That plane is so notoriously dangerous especially back than. Just a guaranteed way to make sure the entire chain of command is removed in one go.
