Ms. Lorenz is forty-four and stands in her kitchen in front of the stove. The ingredients she has laid out are in front of her. She knows what she's going to make. And yet she can't get started.

It's not that she lacks motivation. It's not tiredness either. The order of things has vanished. What comes first, what comes next, how long.

Ms. Lorenz has a university degree and led a team for fourteen years. A year ago, she was still cooking for six people while simultaneously talking on the phone. Her car has been parked for four months. She no longer opens her mail.

Almost everyone gets the same initial response: You have burnout, you need a vacation. Or: That's depression. Both are well-intentioned. For some, both are wrong.

Because with ordinary exhaustion, everything becomes more difficult, but you can still do it. With autistic burnout, you lose abilities. People report that they can no longer drive after twenty years behind the wheel. That they can no longer start an email. Some temporarily lose the ability to speak altogether.

This video explains how to recognize this condition, why it's neither depression nor work burnout, where it comes from, and what actually helps.

A word about the origin of the term, because it's relevant: Autistic burnout wasn't discovered in a clinic. Those affected described it themselves for years in forums and blogs, and research lagged behind.
