The Krakoan Era should have become the new status quo for mutants.

Quite frankly, it wouldn't have mattered how it ended when it did . At the end of the day, the Krakoan era ended far too early. There was so much more to explore.

Something I thought was really interesting about Sins of Sinister was Essex only a had a face-turn when he won and got everything he ever wanted which is exactly what happened in the Age of Apocalypse timeline.  This recurring beat makes Mr. Sinister more interesting to me.

To me, eras should last MUCH longer than they do.
I'm still stuck in the Mutant Academy era, with all different squads.
That should have lasted at least 6 years.

The initial vibes of krakoa were so culty and ominous that it really infected everything it dealt with. I was excited by these implications when it came to Professor X and the quiet council, not trusting their intentions was fun. But every single hero followed suit to the letter from the beginning when I was waiting for someone, anyone to break ranks and question if krakoa was being guided by good intentions. No one felt like independent characters just extensions of krakoa, cyclops was threatening the fantastic four, the X-men were killing themselves in the blind faith that they would always be resurrected.

It desperately needed some pov characters who were hesitant to adapt to krakoa and either came around eventually or pushed further into the rot at the core of it. Nobody pushed back against Xavier and magneto (and Moira’s) visions for the authority of the quiet council.

When the ultimate X-Men were rebuilding they were so careful about shaping who they would be and how they would live, people had doubts, questions, and were reassured or they course corrected and I really wish there was more of that baked into krakoa.

Dude your YouTube channel is severely underrated! I love the format and information

Krakoa got me into Xmen books. I loved it mainly for collaboration and how thought out it felt. I never expected it to last forever but the new status quo feels too unplanned and rushed. It feels closer to when they had relaunched X-men right before Krakoa.

Sigh. It was good while it lasted. I really loved AXE and SoS both, and the ways they contributed to the fall were cool, but didn't get enough time in the oven, so to speak, to truly explore all the ideas at play within them. Also, I am absolutely furious about the way they left Krakoa in the White Hot Room, and think it's such an insufferably neoliberal idea of what a hippie commune paradise would be like. Having that one bug-kid who's name I can't recall lecture Apocalypse, to his face, about how his former ideology was wrong...ugh. Just a bad taste in my mouth all around. Not to mention, uh, like...what's going on with Arrako right now at all? We have barely heard a peep from them since "Heir of Apocalypse" and From the Ashes doesn't seem to be interested in developing any of them whatsoever at this point. Which just sucks because X-Men Red, and the cast of Arrako mutants generally, were so cool. From the Ashes has exceeded my expectations thus far, but it still feels like a bitter pill to swallow, and one that isn't actually all that medicinal anyway. Blugh. Now I've made myself sad and angry again, lol

I'm still going through Morrison's New X-Men run (loving it!), but excited to get to the krakoa era as well. Great video!

Excellent review overall the krakoa era will go down as one of the definitive x eras. Fall of X was 50/50 to me AXE Judgement Day and SOS was great. But the final stories of the fall of x I felt the writers rushed it.

Glad I found this channel; your commentaries are brilliant!!

The irony of the Krakoan era is that, on a meta level, it became what it was trying to avoid. Hickman mentioned he wanted the reboot to be additive and everyone kept pitching him the same “mutants are feared and hunted” stories. Krakoa was a shift in the status quo, and made mutants (not the X-Men) into a faction like Wakanda or Atlantis.

Not long after he left, much like Moira experienced, the mutants lost and the destructive status quo came back. It’s like editorial missed the theme of their own story

Even using the word “masterpiece” in the same sentence as Fall of X is really generous :)
I really liked Krakoa era but every good story needs a decent closure. FoX definitely wasn’t a decent summary/ending.

My feelings on it are also complicated. I thought Krakoa should have stuck around in some form, sort of like an upheaval or revolution where "This is still a safe space for mutants, and we will welcome you defending it. But we will not allow you to corrupt it or run it anymore". Like banishing certain people from the island who were doing more harm than good, while Krakoa stuck around with stories for those often overlooked to enjoy their time in, like the Morlocks. An official nation not run by the X-men, though alliances with each other possible in the future. I wasn't a fan of this being a more poorly done Genosha arc, but there was at least some heart buried underneath it.

I do like some changes. I am very excited for entries of Magick and Psylocke for example getting their own stories and corners of the globe to explore. I just think the stories we see now didn't have to come at the absolute cost of Krakoa as a physical concept and sanctuary. And yeah, I don't even know where to begin with the "Dead X-men" aspect of all of this, I honestly dropped out for a while until I heard it concluded. They really should keep in mind what people they're basing their allegories on before making choices like that, it feels like a backhanded slap a thousand times over.

We'll see how this new era goes. So far I am enjoying the new talent popping up even outside of the X-men books for the Marvel Universe as a whole, I've stuck pretty close to the X-men and ignored everything else since they were the only books working for me remotely at the time post Secret Wars. The Krakoa felt very refreshing and innovative than concepts such as Devil's Reign, which seemed like a less impressive spiritual successor to Civil War. So it's nice to see ideas being spread more widely (let's hope 616 Spidey catches up with everyone else soon).

Anyways, interesting video and retrospective look! Thanks!

❤

So insane that they ended it this early but what the writers pulled off at the end worked for me

I loved the questions the Krakoan era raised regarding mutant resurrection, destiny, tragedy, agency, reproduction. It gave Hope (The Mutant Messiah) a new relevance when it comes to ensuring mutant survival through The 5. It gave Moira a whole new playbook with her multiple lives, which lined up with Sinister's plans to become a Dominium. Overall, it had a bit of everything that's delicious about the X-Men and I'm here for it.

A Bit Of Both, Plus A Little Something Extra?!... The Reasons Why;

1.) It is a Masterpiece: I appreciate what Jonathan Hickman did for giving the X-Men a place to call HOME & a place something worth Fighting For... giving them a place of their own government making their own decisions without any other people's opinion from the Outsiders, they make their own technology they created their own kind of metal and they create their own Events.

2.) It is also a Hot-MESS: For reason some people are going to look at this as oh they're no longer "RELATABLE" anymore, they're making too much money they have become their own little silly Establishment, they're becoming their own little Fascism... and I feel like they should be BURNED down to the ground in "BLAZING INFERNO" and go back to basics and become The UNDERDOGS Again... Also to be honest I find the messy part total Bullsh!t

P.S. - SERIOUSLY... The Mutants "HOME" does not deserve to be taken away from Them? I get it you're trying to satisfy the BASE but sometimes the they can Become... EXTREMELY TOXIC! And to be fair this is one of the few times you do not deserve to satisfy any of those types of People!

Brilliant!!
