◼︎ French Bishop Doubon (96, given name Lereh Dupont) passed away on the 10th.

He arrived in Korea in 1954, the year immediately following the end of the Korean War, and was ordained as a bishop in 1969, assuming the position of the first Bishop of Andong. As a central figure in the Catholic Peasant Movement of the 1970s, he took the lead in protecting the rights and interests of marginalized farmers and laborers, and spoke on behalf of those in need.

In 1990, 15 years before his mandatory retirement age, he stepped down, asserting that the position of Catholic Bishop of Korea should be held by a Korean. He then settled in a small chapel in Haengjuwaedong, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. Bishop Doubon, who was more Korean than Koreans themselves during his half-century of life in Korea! We meet him in 2003, when he personally practiced a frugal and simple life and mingled freely with his parishioners.
