I'm Back in the fish room, I'm answering your FAQ about my DIY 12ft discus tank. Today's video is all about discus and how they live in my aquarium. I hope you enjoy these fish tank tips!
Spoiler: there are no rules, and if there were - I would break them all! This is not so much a care guide as a warning against some care guides and advice people tend to give on keeping discus fish.

I was sitting here sweating, worrying, freaking out about my 10 juvs coming and this video is exactly what I needed. I've checked all the boxes, I've researched, I've prepared. I'm READY to enjoy discus now. 💯

Excellent video, Discus aren't my thing as I think they would eat my shrimp, but this is such a helpful, non-elitist video for people looking to keep them!

Your fish are so happy and healthy. ❤ I appreciate you sharing your advice to those who want to keep discus

A very nice video. On the one hand, you can tell from your fish that you know what you're talking about and that people should take your advice to heart. On the other hand, you don't come across as patronizing or know-it-all. Thank you!

I used to read all the tfh books on discus that was available at the time in the 90's. I got really obsessed with them. Ended up with a shed full of tanks for them. Bred, raised and sold them. Looking back at them tfh books now they were more like picture books with very little advice and the advice which was given was almost the same in every book. In fact you could say the printing was exactly the same with the only difference being the photos

Thank you thank you THANK YOU! as a first time discus owner ( going to pick my 7 up TONIGHT) watching this video has made me feel 1000 x better. After researching and watching about 500 videos I've been pulling my hair out! Literally having nightmares about getting them! Do this ..don't do that...do THIS .... absolutely don't do that!!! I'm not watching another video. I'm going to go get my fish and hope for the best . Im striving to have my discus hi-fiving each other in my tank. 🙂

Nicely done. I am a fan of heavy filtration in my discus tank. I have 12-13 turnovers per hour using the manufacturer's claimed rate because I strongly suspect they calculate it with an empty filter. If so, the actual rate is probably close to 75% of the claimed rate with clean media and 50% of claimed rate with dirty media.

This amount of filtration does make it difficult or impossible to use flake or pellet food but I found a solution. Other than occasional live or frozen food, I use freeze dried beef heart, blackworms, and brine shrimp in a feeding cone suspended in the water. That allows the discus to graze without the faster moving fish in the tank to get all of the food. One feeding a day I put some Vita Chem on the cubes.

Gorgeous discus, pragmatic approach - the latter is one of the reasons I enjoy your channel.

I really enjoyed this video. I very rarely comment but I felt I just had to this time. So full of common sense...very refreshing. No elitism as it should be, and I fully agree that all fish deserve prestine conditions, so well said.
Kind regards, Dave JAGO.
