Hi Abbie. Lots of good advice. I especially liked the hut at Mont Fort on the WHR. The guardian is a pastry chef and we got incredible pain au chocolat that he baked that morning. Evening dinner was great too and it has a very warm atmosphere.

Aw..brought back loads of memories, Abbie...thanks . I did my first hut to hut aged nearly 60 and, despite worrying about sleeping with a bunch of strangers, I didn't struggle at all...there was one memotable moment in Refuge Lechere when I got up in the middle of the night to go to the loo and the small room I was in, packed with around 20 mattersses on two levels, was like a concert hall with a whole orchestra of snores and other noises...it made me giggle. I always sleep with earphones connected to my phone with white noise waves playing...this seems to be the perfect noise to cancel out snores and is very calming. Favourite hut on TMB...Le Peuty...we slept on mattresses on a "shelf" in an old barn but the welcome was so good and the food was amazing. Elizabetta was great, if a little chaotic and lacking in the shower department!! Loved them all, really...always a welcome sight at the end of the day. Love your comment that, when we are out on the trail, we are a community. It really did feel like that. I wish we had a hut to hut trail in Northumberland...or the Yorkshire Dales. B&Bs are great (and you don't have to share toilets and showers!!) but it's not the same.

Reaoly helpful advice. for newbies. I agree with you about the variability of huts. I'm a veggie and, 60 years ago, that was hugely difficult. 20 years ago much better. I must say, doing a long day's'mountain trek, on coffee and some dry bread, wasn't great. Happy days, though.

Great little video - useful tips. Didn’t know about the liner and “cash”, what is that? 🤣 I’ve visited many huts while out hiking but never been brave enough to stay in one! I also struggle with people who snore - even on campsites I usually end up sleeping with ear phones in listening to sleep music 😴😴😴😴

I lived in the Alps (North West of Italy, on the border with France and Switzerland) for 19 years many years ago. As a lifetime vegan I never had a chance to get enough food for my calories needs in any of those "Rifugi". I always brought my own food to make sure I would succesfully survive! 😂

Much of this great advice is applicable to hostels as well. I'd add: know where your body is in space; try not to bump into others, elbow them, or push ahead. Be courteous and aware of people being around you. For snorers, I highly highly recommend mouth taping. It sounds dreadful but it's really not. There are lots of brands you can try, or you can just use removable medical tape with light adhesive. Just a strip or two works. It keeps your mouth from falling open, but if you need a big breath of air, it pops off; you will not suffocate!! for many snorers, this will give you deeper sleep, as well as helping those around you, as you breathe through your nose. Try it at home before you go. I'm disturbed by the lack of breakfast though - that seems to be contrary to paying for "demi pension!" But noted; I'll bring bars just in case and more snacks. I'll also treat my sleeping liner and pack with permethrin ahead of time to forestall the bugs. Thanks for the great video Abbie!

I hike and free camp a lot I Scotland . I’ve stayed in a bothy in stormy conditions but even there you get your own bed platform and it’s easy to put up a tarp as a curtain
This is so cosy basically sharing a bed with strangers. Pray there’s no snoring .

If you are buying ear plugs for the noisy dorm, don't buy the skinny ones in the chemist/hiking shop, buy the real ones the builders use in Screwfix or similar - much cheaper too
