I just love how popular culture has turned Mr. Hyde into steampunk Hulk.
The original novel is the story of a detective trying to piece together the events leading to the death of Dr. Jekyll.
In this story, Dr. Jekyll is a renowned member of London society, but he's quite bored. Life is good, but he can't, for instance, enjoy the night life for fear of tarnishing his reputation.
As Victorian English scientists are wont to do, he starts experimenting in search of miracle cures, and discovers a mixture that changes his appearance.
The important factor is that it doesn't make him monstrous or especially strong, just look different. And he's still in full control of his faculties.
The shift in personality only comes from being freed up from society's constraints, so he can indulge in things he couldn't otherwise.
Unfortunately, in a fit of drunken rage, he smites a person dead, and is afterward pursued by police. It's at this point that he realizes that the potion no longer works, and he's stuck as Hyde.
He even tries to recreate the potion - showing that he has the mind of the doctor - but it seems some impurity in the first batch of ingredients was what made the whole thing work.
In the end, as the police and the walls close in, he commits suicide to save the last shred of his dignity.

Arguably, Hyde wasn't an alternate personality as much as an excuse for Jekyll to do whatever he wanted, free from decency and morality.  The horror of the novel is that all the affairs and murder and theft were things Jekyll had in his heart.
It's like summoning a demon, but the demon doesn't really have to tempt you as much as enable you to do whatever you want.

My favorite part was when you walked to the right, to be fair my second favorite part was when you walked to the left.

The Bomb Maniac is the secondary antagonist of the 1988 NES game Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

He is a mysterious man who pops up everywhere to create explosions and due to the evil spirit of Letule, is trying to kill Dr. Jekyll.

I saw some video where they were ranking the hardest game for each console. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was among one of the hardest games for the system. I was like "my dude, Nate, made it seem easy". I'm gonna have to give it a try.

Ah yes, the minor annoyances of life, like people dropping bombs every five feet you walk on a daily basis.

Lore drop. In this game, Mr. Hyde is a demon who co-habits Dr. Jekyll's body. You lose the game if Mr. Hyde steps foot in the church because the "powers that be" has decreed the church as a holy place where no demon may step forth and smites the player with lightening. The main boss in this game is called Letule. In the manual he is described as the King of Demon World and sees Mr. Hyde as a threat, that is why he sends all those other demons out to attack him when you are Mr. Hyde. When you are Dr. Jekyll, Letule can't attack you directly, so he possesses the Bomb Maniac (sorry he doesn't have an actual name), and little Billy with his slingshot, to try and kill Dr. Jekyll. In the true ending, when Mr. Hyde kills Letule, he stops possessing those two and they go back to normal. This is why the town becomes peaceful and you can just stroll on through.

Took the dog out to go potty this morning and he wouldn’t come back in the house. So I walked out there barefoot to get him, and stepped in a pile of poo that my daughter failed to pick up and it was soggy with two days of constant rain.

One thing about these old games, they were willing to be weird and experimental.
But I'm glad I got to appreciate it by watching you, and didn't have to go through it myself.

Im sooo happy you did this game! I never understood it and now i really wanna play it. The whole concept of a platform bullet hell with the allegory of not letting your inner demons overpower you is really dope.

It does look better is that it has been explained. It is interesting how much thought was put into this game. It was bold using a classic novel that mast people even in the 80’s never read. Enjoyed the play through and commentary. Subscribed

I just stumbled upon your channel and subscribed after 2 videos. We seem to be of a similar age, and definitely have a similar sense of humor. I'm cracking up at all your references, though I break into spontaneous songs a lot more often when gaming lol. Imo, you're the best retro "play-through guy" on YouTube. Hopefully me having Premium brings you some extra revenue.

Hey, I just found your channel not too long ago. I've been on a retro game kick and I've beaten a few insanely tough games that I never would've been able to beat before. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle and Wayne's World for the NES are a couple of them.

I found your channel through the Super C walkthrough and I gotta say that you're giving me some very useful tips and tricks that I never would've considered on my own. Your walkthroughs are very helpful for someone that even someone that may not be the absolute best at gaming (like me) can have a fighting chance at beating some insanely hard games.

I never thought I would ever beat Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, let alone actually have a fighting chance, but seeing this has inspired me to give it one final chance and by the time I made it to level 6, I felt I might as well keep going since I made it this far. Low and behold, I managed to beat this game!

Honestly, it's not a very good game, but there was a good concept in here. It was just poorly executed as far as the Jekyll stages go. Plus, the infamy of this game spawned by AVGN has made this a very fascinating game. Something you can make multiple videos on and still find something new to say.

So yeah, thank you for your service and making these games easier for us normies. 👍
