😳 Is that fair?
Why does Everyman, of all people, get another chance, even though he's said "no" to God his whole life? While others try to be faithful, to pray, and to keep the commandments—why does it seem as if God ultimately takes in the one who has run away from Him for so long?
Sermon by Don Andreas Kerschenbauer on Sunday, September 27, 2026, the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, in Thalgau.
Bible references: (Ezekiel 18:25–28; Philippians 2:1–11; Matthew 21:28–32)
And an even more important question:
Is God actually a good father to me—or a businessperson who constantly demands something from me?
Don Andreas takes us into the story of Everyman and into the Gospel of the Lord's Vineyard. Everyman seemingly has nothing to show for himself. His good works have withered, his life was far from God. And yet, in the final hour, something crucial happens: He finds his way back to Jesus.
But why?
Not because his past is suddenly undone. Not because God simply doesn't care about his decisions. But because Jesus wants to save the person who opens themselves to him.
⏱️ CHAPTER
00:00 – EVERYONE! Death claims everyone
02:31 – Is that FAIR?!
03:25 – God: Tyrant or Father?
06:36 – Say YES – as HIS child!
❤️ God: Tyrant or Father?
Perhaps this is precisely the crucial question for our own faith:
Do I follow God because I have to – or because I know I am loved?
The Christian faith doesn't begin with a contract of servitude. God doesn't simply say: "Do this, or else…"
He invites us:
"My child, will you come with me?"
The commandments are no longer merely demands from a boss. They become the path of a child who trusts their father and discovers: God means well for me.
The Christian life is not just a collection of duties. It's about relationship, community, prayer, and the experience of belonging to God's family.
The Community of Saint Martin also wants to make this experience visible: Priests live and work together and, in doing so, want to make something of the Church as God's family tangible.
And that's precisely where this sermon leads:
You are not God's employee.
You are not his slave.
You are his beloved child.
Therefore, today's invitation isn't simply:
"You must say yes!"
But rather:
"Say yes—because you have discovered who God truly is."
🙏 Listen and ask yourself:
Is God truly my father?
Why do I say yes to him—out of love or out of duty?
What would change if I truly trusted God? Do I live in such a way that other people see some of the joy of God's children?
Because in the end, we shouldn't be envious of everyone.
Rather:
Everyone should be envious of us—of the joy of a life with God.
And perhaps that is precisely the path by which others, too, will one day find their own YES to God.
