After entering the forest, the vegetation on both sides became increasingly lush. There were reports of bear sightings here on August 19th, so I seriously bought a bear bell…
Was it actually useful? Did I encounter any bears along the way? This time, I finally saw the real "Beware of Bears" (a popular cycling warning) with my own eyes.
🚴 Just how much stamina do you need?
I'll share my honest impressions after this cycling trip:
If you can usually cycle 100-120 kilometers, you'll have a fantastic time in Hokkaido;
If you can usually cycle around 50-70 kilometers, that's perfectly fine;
Even if you can only usually cycle 20-40 kilometers, it's still possible, but you'll need to practice your long-distance cycling pace beforehand.
🏨 How much does it cost to stay overnight while cycling in Hokkaido?
I stayed for 6 nights this time. The cheapest was about 70 AUD, the most expensive was over 200 AUD, and most accommodations were around 130-170 AUD.
I'll also share my experiences with different types of accommodations, and whether or not you can fit your bicycle in the room.
🎒 How much stuff should you bring for a 5.5-day solo ride?
This time, I truly traveled "extremely light":
Clothes, shoes, repair tools, tire patching kit, power bank, memory cards, and all photography equipment were packed onto my bicycle.
📷 My shooting equipment was also kept as simple as possible.
I only brought two main cameras:
DJI OSMO 360 and DJI Pocket 4 Pro. One was used for recording the ride and capturing special angles, while the other was used for regular vlogs, portraits, and landscapes.
With this light-packed trip, this setup meant I rarely had to stop and fiddle with the camera for extended periods.
