I've been building my dream home and homestead in the middle of the forest on 18 acres of land in Canada and this week, I need to get ready for winter!

Years also I dropped all these trees and excavated them into a messy and dirty pile. This week I have to untangle it, and figure out how to get these bucked and split logs from the wetlands all the way to my wood boiler – the life force that we heat our home with.

Will a Chevy trail boss work? Nope. But I have some tricks up my sleeve! Time to bring in the big guns – The John Deere Gator. This bad boy rips through the forest like no other, hauls all the firewood we need and dumps it perfectly into place. We're one step closer to heating our home!

My choice would be either a 20 ft. or 40 ft. shipping container. You can cut a large opening into the sides for easy access. The older used ones are cheap, storm proof, fire proof, water proof, rot proof, bullet proof,and might not even need any permits to use them as a storage building !.

Depending on permits, I'd go with two shipping containers spaced apart for a covered carport where you can store your Gator, wood splitter and a Ski-Doo etc. One container could be for wood storage and the other just storage/future wood storage if needed.

I would go for a 2x 40 ft containers{ 20 ft apart} barn with a metal roof over the whole thing . Sit this winter out and get whatever permits you require. Then level and place the cntrs and put up the roof. Building once now , with future expansion/storage requirements in mind will allow you to focus on homesteading activities going forward. Large covered storage is invaluable and will protect future machinery and equipment that you acquire .

I'm someone that goes with the easier option. Two side by side sheds. I don't see it as clutter - it's easier. You don't need a permit, you can get started now and once you've done one the second one will go up way easier. Plus if you ever need to do maintenance or repairs on one shed, you still have the other "in use" if you get me?

It was already said but I agree. 2 containers spread wide enough for vehicles, gator, log splitter...and a metal roof
Solar powered fans (very cheap) cut into the containers for drying the wood.

How about two 40 foot containers. If you set them with space in the middle you can build a roof above the two and get space in between that's under the roof.

I would suggest using totes to keep the wood in.
Make a small shed close to the boiler to fit a tote so you don't have to walk far with the wood.
And have 1 or more sheds with an open side to keep the rest of the totes.

Get the permit and build a shed. It’s all about content, but it’s also the better option.

You can now get shipping containers with the side doors already in them straight from the factory. They are usually one use high cube versions. Look at Ritchie Brothers auctions as they always have them. Most of the cost is delivery. You can get them in 20ft and 40ft versions. I am in Ontario also and have one. Another options is a container shelter setup but if in high wind location not the best. Machine ground pressure is going to play a bigger part for you. A tracked skidsteer, even a mini stand on, compared to a smaller tractor. For just moving stuff a Can-Am Defender with a dump body.

My opinion is, stuff that carport full of wood for the winter, and build a single shed or consider a shipping container. Shipping containers are relatively inexpensive, if you can get it in there.

I'd say go with a Shed Because sheds hold heat. Pretty good , and if You put wet wood in there Too dry, it should dry in no time. And you can even put an exhaust fan That way, it doesn't get too hot in there.
