This documentary covers the dramatic rise and fall of one of the most iconic aircraft in history - the Junkers Ju-87 Stuka. This dive bomber and it's "Jericho Trumpet" siren became a propaganda piece for the Luftwaffe and terrorized targets across all of Europe. The Automatic Pull out from the dive without the pilot needing to do that is super impressive. Even if the pilot passed out from the G forces the plane would just do it. Thats something else for its time.

I’ve seen one of these planes in person. What struck me about the aircraft was, it is much bigger then it would appear in media.

Thanks for the story of stuka. It's siren was so infamous that in movie every diving bombing will have that sound, no matter what plane it was doing it LOL.

In fact: A Ju-87R-2 wk.nr.6234 L1+FW is being restored to airworthy at the Flying heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Washington State California which will be the only airworthy Ju-87 in the world. Great history TJ3.

As 1950-60s boy, I marvelled at the ascetics of this masterpiece... Squared edges, jagged lines, the stoic cockpit cover !!!
Gothic art, reining down terror in the 20th century... Truly amazing !!!

My father served in the German Luftwaffe as a radio operator and machine gunner in a Ju 87 Stuka. He was 21 years old. When we were children, he told us about his experiences on the Eastern Front. I am 72 now. Back then in Germany, everyone called the Stuka sirens the "Trumpets of Jericho."

Udet was a CRAZY dude. I love the Stuka and the "cement plane"
Ilushin 2 Sturmavik.

The stuka also was the first bomb drop of ww2, the first aircraft to shoot down another aircraft in ww2 and the last German aircraft to surrender after landing at an allied airfield. The legendary rudely had his stukas carry more men in the cockpits when he surrender to the west so they wouldn't be captured by the Russians. His stukas record is incredible

My great-grandfather was a plane mechanic under the Luftwaffe in North African campaign. He lived until 2005 and as I remember he told us a lot about the Stuka which was legendary.

Finland here: We Finns have a a lot of respect for the Stuka/Ju 87 and the pilots of Gefechtsverband Kuhlmey. In the summer of 1944 they helped stop the Soviet summer offensive and avoiding occupation.

The Stuka's design is fascinating!

I think the story is not complete without a whole chapter on the Henschel Hs123. The German dive bomber.

Mate of mine told us about his Dad skinny dipping with some other diggers near Tobruk.A stuka came hurtling out of the sky catching the naked diggers un armed and with nowhere to run to nowhere to hide [ shout out to Martha and rhe Vandellas !] so they stood in the water shaking their fists and other bits in defiance .The stuka levelled out the canopy slid back and a black gauntleted hand was thrust out and began waving at the diggers as it slowly flew past .
Who saod chivalry was dead ?

7:25 has to be the funniest sequence of events here.
"You are ordered to stop development immediately! Oh and congratulations on your promotion sir. What's the first order of business?"
"...continue development of the aircraft..."
"..."
"..."
"...Walked right into that one, didn't we?"

@Wardads1 1 year ago

First air to air kill of WW2 went to a stuka ,

Thank you for providing such a thorough and fair account of Ju87 successes, listing the many accomplishments when we usually only hear about their shortcomings and vulnerabilities during the Battle of Britain. It's amazing to me that a plane that was manufactured in such great numbers throughout the war, over 3,000 if I'm correct, had only around 100 left at war's end and only two complete examples left today. Having read Rudel's book, Stuka Pilot, and all ideologies aside, the end of the Stuka, after all their commitment and work, is actually kind of a sad tale. I'm sure very few will agree with that sentiment. Oh, well.

18:02 I need to correct you here. That picture is of the German heavy cruiser, Blücher, sinking after being shelled and torpedoed in Oslofjord on April 9, 1940 at the Battle of Drøbak Sound.

This video showed me one thing with hindsight : how realistic the original IL-2 Sturmovik simulator was.
I've flown the Stuka quite a lot in this game, and I always wondered if directly nosing down to the target instead of doing a split-S was wrong. No, it was not. It was actually the way to go. Kudos to the developers to have implemented that detail in an era where internet was not as mainstream as nowadays to collect info.

Also in this game, the Stuka showed to be a fantastic Bullseye Machine with its automatic dive / recovery control system. The problem being... arriving to the target in one piece if the enemy had positionned interceptors or triple A on the way. 😅

Hans Rudel was the only German to get the highest Iron Cross award issued, while flying a Stuka. They had to make new catagory of iron Cross just to issue it to him.
