Reviving a Rare 52 Year Old Toyota Hilux — Will It Run and Drive?

This abandoned 1974 Toyota Hilux was an unfinished project left to die. Our goal was simple: bring this 52-year old Toyota back to life and get it driving again, no matter what it took.
What started as a simple attempt to revive an old Hilux quickly turned into one of the biggest projects we’ve taken on. We worked through old fuel, wiring issues, carburetor problems, brakes, and countless other surprises just trying to make this forgotten Toyota run again.
And then we discovered the engine was in much worse shape than we hoped.
With time running out, we tore the engine apart right where the truck had been sitting, pulled the pistons, honed the cylinders, installed new rings and valve seals, and rebuilt the 22R engine in the weeds.
After 3 long days of fighting this truck, there was only one thing left to find out:
Could this abandoned Hilux actually drive again?
This is the full story of bringing a forgotten Toyota Hilux back from the dead, from the first attempt to start it to its first drive in over two decades.
