"Did your parents have any children that lived" is the most savage insult I've ever heard...

An odd fact that you learn in the military is that Drill Instructors are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Their anger is not fueled by hatred. For many, it's something more akin to cheerleading, just with more insults

The most impressive thing of Full Metal Jacket is Hartman only appears in the first 30 minutes of the film and never again later but nobody remembers what happens in the rest of the film.

He was the guest of honor at my last marine corps ball in 2008. His eyebrows stuck out like an inch from his face... was crazy. Love the man though.

You need to understand that these guys aren’t standard humans , they gave their lives for their country in Vietnam and this film depicts it in the most accurate way.

Expecting a Devil Dog, ESPECIALLY from the 'Nam era, to be PC is like expecting water to be dry.

His death was the only celebrity death to bring me to actual tears. When I was a kid, I watched his Lock N’ Load docuseries religiously. He was an amazing man and I wish I could’ve met him. RIP R Lee Ermey!

OMG, I forgot about that Geico commercial. When he offers the tissues and then throws it still makes me laugh.

To be fair, he IS acting to an extent. He said that a real drill sergeant would never have been allowed to do a lot of the things Hartman did. He even said the part was exaggerated over a real drill sergeant.

Someone held a gun to his head and forced him to write that apology for geico

For a Soldier to portray a Marine in a Marine movie, and a actual Marine wants the role, give it to the Marine, we do not pull punches on realism. The Gunny was the best damn decision they did for that film.

He passed away while I was in boot camp , senior came out and told us , weird feeling coming from a marine corps family and watching full metal jacket on repeat as a kid.

It was an interview with R. Lee Ermey that made me see Drill Sergeants in a different light.
His job during Vietnam was to train as many people as possible to be good enough to be sent out there, and even he admits it was all a struggle to get that many troops trained well and fast enough.
He looks back at that time with many regrets, especially when he hears about platoons of soldiers he had trained died.
He said he didn't train them good enough to survive out there, after hearing such news.
This made me realize, that while the military is filled with absolute jackasses in power, I respect those who had to spend the time, energy, and mental strength to train a bunch of zero experience young men to survive the utter horrors and dangers of a battlefield.
Even more so to the Marines, who basically have to be the spearhead that everyone else follows behind of.

That letter at 7:11 shows Stanley Kubrick may have been a perfectionist but he wasn’t an awful person about switch the roles around.

3:10 Dude you have no idea. I never thought I was capable of some of the shit I managed to do physically. That fear is insane motivation.
