This is a GREAT video! You deserve more subscribers! keep it up!

Compressing to H.264 right after capture doesn’t make sense. You want to edit the losslessly compressed file not the compressed one.

It's 2024. I have VHS tapes from the late 1970s that still play fine. They've all been digitized. 😊

I've been tinkering with Topaz VEAI since 2021, the Artemis model "Low Quality v8" from the earlier versions produced the best results with VHS. They only include the v10+ models nowadays, but it can be imported back. The "recover detail" wasn't an option in those versions, now the results are even better

First, LOVE this.  I'm working on a documentary and restoring old footage, audio, etc.  This was very helpful. The Topaz AI topic may have saved me a TON of wrestling with that software.
I also want to share some of my successes.  In trying to fix Audio specifically, both with a very old black & white VHS and a digitized Casette recording I discovered that Logic Pro has a new Stem Seperation feature.  This turned out to be MAGICAL.  On the VHS I had a persistant loud hum that was making it really hard to hear dialogue/speech.  Later in the tape there's live music which overpowered the hum.  Logic Pro completely isolated the dialgoue and put hum/music on a seperate track.  I actually just realized I could have told it to do more track seperation but since it uses musical terminology I only considered "Vocals" and "Other" hoping it would recognize HUM as "Other".  It did.

2nd Success: Casette tape of dad singing over piano player.  The piano was competely overpowering him in the recording.  Logic Pro VERY cleanly seperated the vocals and piano.  I was able to put both Stems back on my FCP X timeline and just raise the vocals and lower the piano to rebalance.  No more spiking and no more useless attempts to improve the sound in FCP X alone.  It can do great things but not like Logic Pro.  Wow.

Hope that helps someone!  Maybe worth a try on old VHS restoration where the audio is suffering.

Subscribed, liked. Oh man that change in quality is freaking awesome! Nice job!

The motion graphics and editing in this video is tops. Great job.

Really fantastic video - thanks for walking through everything so helpfully!

Just found your channel. Long live the algorithm! Subscribed.

I have nothing to add other than nice video. Love this stuff.

Thanks, I think your hard work paid off!

I would just do 720x480i capture in a lossless format, that'll give you the closest to the actul video signal you can get unless someone comes out with a doomesday duplicator for vhs, which would literally capture the signal, not in a video format, but as a very, very high sample rate (10mh) pcm.

This video should get more attention

I just started with a trial version of Topaz. And when you said 1% better, My thoughts exactly! Not like the AI advertised with the grainy swipe to perfect. That can't be done! Your video here is proof. Thankx for sharing, and saving me hours of trying. (& $300).

멋진 복원작업 잘 보았습니다.

In my experience, if correctly stored, VHS tapes are actually quite durable even with the HiFi stereo audio track. My oldest tapes are from 1989 and still look great. The greater challenge going forward in my longitudinal experiment is keeping the VHS & S-VHS VCRs going so yes, digitise your tapes as soon as you can. I'm quietly excited to see what AI can do with video as it improves.  Thanks for your video. Personally, I want to check in on my collection every decade and see how they are going. At 36 years, so far so good.

Wow! That looks like n great work to me, dude!

I held on to all my old VHS capture devices including a Pinnacle Porsche design unit & a ADV  firewire based capture box I got later on.
The Pinnacle software worked great and yea, they were pretty big files for the time, but I used an SVHS VCR and the most calibrated Panasonic deck I could get at the time.

They were not my videos, rather my Son's mothers old home video tapes of her family that her dad recorded over the years.
This last year, I uploaded all of them to a second channel in raw format at the 480p resolution they were captured in while still keeping all the originals and backups.

Its a good thing I did it when I did, as me and his mother shortly separated after that.
So many people died in the last few years, and this is really the only videos left of them as I am sure the original tapes are degrading now, as they were in that state were they were just almost unplayable.

I did the bake and dry method to get them playable, and did everything I could to bring them back.
Doing about 34 tapes took me most of the summer.

I subscribed to TOPAZ and will be trying out settings to see what works for shorter videos, but don't plan on doing all 34 anytime soon as I am really only worried about the ones I took from a crummy cell phone camera.

I'm going to wait till I can get my hands on much much faster hardware in the future as in the next 6 years, we may see the new chips not based on silicon enter the market with terahertz performance promised.

Some of the footage is going to need smart A.I. rebuilding of the scenes from scratch.
I would hold on to all these old memories if they are important to you or others.
And sometimes?
Its just good to bring them back to their old time splendor.

On top of that?
This next week, I'm starting on all my old MiniDV and D8 Sony tapes to get those ripped to hard drives.
I have over a 100 of those.

The extreme effort looks really good, now you have the process figured out the next video can be done much faster
