Once again, the intended length of this video was 1 hour and 12 minutes. Unfortunately, YouTube had me cut out lots of the parts with R. Lee Ermey, so the full version can be found on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/ReactLikeBarry

Heads up, Vincent D'Onofrio (Pyle) has been known to shout out reactors from time to time on twitter. Hes a phenominal actor, and very humble guy.

R Lee was a master wordsmith. And fun fact the first scene with them getting their hair cut was filmed last.
Kubrick screwed them all by shaving their heads at the end of filming , hence the thousand yard stare of ' this is some bull'

@chicagoartistjon_3000 1 month ago

The extra recruits in boot camp of were actually members of the British Territorial Army. Kubrick hired them assuming they would know basic military things, but they had to be completely retrained by Lee Ermey to march the American way.

@iKvetch558 1 month ago

I have never seen it specifically stated by Kubrick anywhere, but Private Pyle...Leonard Lawrence...is a clear representation of a real program that the Defense Department ran in the 1960s. It was called "Project 100,000" and it was a test to see whether the mental and physical parameters for serving in the US military could be widened to make the pool of potential service people larger. Between escalation in Vietnam and all the other military commitments of the Cold War in those days, the military was concerned about a shortage of people to serve. So they started testing whether recruits who were normally just a bit below the normal standard for IQ, or emotional stability, or physical fitness could be turned into effective military personnel. The same program probably would have led to Forrest Gump being recruited and serving in Vietnam.

One of the nicknames that was used for the program was "McNamara's Morons".

R. Lee Ermy said that while there were rules about striking recruits it happened anyway. He was a Marine Corps drill instructor during the Vietnam War. He said every drill instructor knew all these kids were going to Vietnam and a lot of them weren’t coming back from the stories their buddies had from over there. They only had 8-10 weeks to get these 17 and 18 year old draftees ready to go.

We only had to call our Drill Instructors “sir” until we all received our Eagle, Glove, and Anchor after The Crucible. As far as laughing at what the Drill Instructors say when they’re laying into recruits that came near the end of boot camp. Those first few weeks you were so scared you didn’t want to stand out in any way. Also, there was always a Drill Instructor in the shadows so even if you thought you were on the clear, you weren’t. Every Marine’s boot camp is the same whether you’re going into the infantry, supply, avionics, or journalism.

Those barbers weren’t the gentlest either. They’d rip up kids’ scalps and heaven forbid you had moles on you head cuz them shitz was going to get razored off.

Fun fact: the final scenes of this movie were shot in the same location that Aliens was filmed at - a decommissioned coal fired power plant.

Vincent D’Onfrio shredded his knee on the pull up bar scene.

@mathewlang5749 1 month ago

Kubrick hated to travel and only shot films in location as close as possible to his home. Everything in this film was shot in England.

Love that you did the jogging song too. XD
Was wondering if you've ever heard of the band Sabaton? Their songs cover people who have fought in many different battles. They have a history channel, too.

I had the honor of meeting R Lee Ermey at a Marine Corps ball when I was in C school in the Navy in Dam Neck, VA back in 97. He was the guest of honor. Got his autograph, talked to him a little in the smoke pit. He was an awesome guy.

I Need the reaction to the German movie Stalingrad (1993) it’s genuinely one of the best war movies ever made

I like that you commented on the lil pieces of each guys kit. The VIetnam era uniform and gear is my favourite. So iconic looking.

18:50 This is truth. Brooklyn was the dude in phase one that said he wanted out. When we were in our dress blues (Air Force) preparing to graduate he was still running around doing errands.

To this day I still have nightmares of going for the pig in a firefight and having the grip/trigger housing fall off because the leaf spring broke...

Gunny said he tried to act like the worst DI he could think of in terms of cruelty while still being as real as possible. Also, Gomer Pyle is implied to be one of McNamara's 100,000. Also, weird bit of information, but Charles Whitman left a note behind, talking about how he felt something was wrong in his brain and that once he was dead, they needed to cut into it and check, he had also been speaking about having a in issue with something in his head that he had felt was making him violent and less able to control himself. His autopsy found a pecan sized tumor in his brain growing in the area that legitimately controlled everything he told people, including doctors, that he was having issues with.

Nice little bit of symbolism for you Barry since you like that stuff, in the last scene where he shoots the girl, as he raises his pistol, the peace button is slowly covered up until you can’t see it. Joker has fully crossed over.

I had an E5 on his way to Drill School who recited the opening speech verbatim when possible... just for fun

@JoeGenova-wk9rx 1 month ago

The crazy machine gunner was supposed to play the part of Sgt. Hartman. Stanley Kubrick was so impressed with R Lee Ermey , who gave him examples of what a DI would say and do, that he gave Ermey the part. Fun Fact: While filming the initial part when Sgt. Hartman comes in and gives them hell, it only took 2-3 takes. The donut eating scene took 37 takes. I loved “Mail Call” with Ermey back in the day. RIP Gunny !

6:31 When I went through Air Force BMT they made us put a “Sir” or “Ma’am” before our “Reporting Statement” (i.e. that spiel you have to deliver before saying what you actually need to say, “Sir! Trainee Snuffy Reports as Ordered! The answer to that is such-and-such!”).

BUT you’re NOT required to Preface with a Sir/Ma’am any responses in the Affirmative or Negative. So it’s just “Yes Sir!” or “No Sir!” like in the Army.

NOW, they don’t specifically teach you that distinction on Zero Week!

What happens is, someone makes the “mistake” of saying “Sir, Yes Sir,” and THEN they get chewed-out for giving the Instructor a “Sir Sandwich,” loudly enough for the rest of the formation to hear.

As a former PH Army ROTC Cadet I found that a screwed-up way to teach Courtesies, like it’s some sort of hazing custom.

cam across your channel by pure chance, I was never in the military but hearing your insight on things I am interested from your perspective is so awesome! good shit man keep it up!
