Leaked alpha builds of red/green actually did confirm that wartortle and blastoise were originally designed to be parts of unrelated lines of turtle pokemon. There's old sprites for a bigger, final form looking wartortle as well as a baby blastoise with smaller cannons. At some point during development they decided to cut the fat and merge the two turtle families into one.

In defense of the Magikarp merchant, that is genuinely the best time to get a magikarp because starting the babysitting level up process pre-mt moon is a lot easier than post

Oh right, I'd forgotten how much of a roadblock Aerodactyl was in the Butterfree runs.

Also Kangaskhan was initially in the safari zone but in games where the safari zone don't exist (gsc, let's go etc), it can be found in rock tunnel

Actually, I believe Sandshrew can be found in Mt Moon or the patch of grass right outside Cerulean city

Fearow is what Pidgeot should’ve been. A decent early game Mon that you eventually drop. Unfortunately Pidgeot is just kinda buns. Especially in XD.

Wasn't there some gif of a bird being pulverised by a baseball in a live match? I remember hearing about something like that, though it might just be some staged shit
Porygon's pretty well known for being based on a like "dipping duck" toy thing, so you're actually on the money there!

I played uranium somewhat recently, and I really do think if it wasnt taken down by pokemon company people would not give anywhere near as much of a shit about it.
It's honestly pretty alright? god it was not balanced correctly. steel being the ONLY counter to the new type that hits fucking every other type supereffectively was a choice, but the mon designs and anything else not related to "radioactive type" as a concept were quite good!
