One of THE greatest drummers of all time.
And the best thing is that he has become even better as he's aged. Discarding the youthful, physical affectations (as seen in this video), he is now the complete musician, tasteful, musical, restrained, subtle, yet explosive.
Just a joy.

So interesting to see this. As a young budding musician in Westchester NY in the 70's., I was lucky to have some friends that were good friends and bandmates with him. This is way back when he played in a Jazz Fusion band called "Nite Sprite". Even at that young age, we knew he was really special and going to make his mark. So when we were partying on a Friday night, I think DW was at home practicing and doing drills like sight reading his charts upside down !! Always highly schooled and disciplined as I remember. When he first got the gig with Chick and the Electric Band, it was thrilling to see him on that stage at The Bottom Line of West 4th Street (closed now ....sad....). But it was clear then that we were witnessing the birth of a world class drumming legend that would stand the test of time. And to this day, he lives up to that title very well.

There's incredible drummers, and then there's Dave weckl

It's interesting to observe Dave's flow from these flashy early days to the much more controlled and concise statements on the drums he offers nowadays. He was ahead of his time back then, as he is now.

It's 1992. Have never seen this before. What a creative thinking and dynamics! Just brilliant!

To my ears, this is drum poetry, full of different types of constrasts, and flawlessly phrased.

I will never forgive myself for not study his drumming in 90's. I was too obsessed with rock music at the time. This year I've been practicing his chops and technique and it give me so much level up of my skill although I only learned it for just about 7 months.
But anyway I have evolved by his play after all and will keep learning his chops forever.

This is one of those videos I find myself revisiting from time to time for some inspiration. His playing is definitely ahead of it’s time and if I grew up around then and saw this it would have been one of those experiences that stuck with me and defined my overall musical style. A perfect example of how great he is and how many drummers he’s shaped over the years. Absolutely love Gospel Chops and can see clearly from this video how he’s influenced it.
