It's the bass drum falling inline with the triplets that I find a struggle. He was so smooth.

Toto was a band that was so far ahead of its time, I haven't found a way to describe it.

This is so helpful. I really want to get this down by the end of the year

Intermediate Piano player here. I bet that feels soo good to play once you get comfortable with it. I could imagine playing this for quite a while just for the vibe of it, getting lost in the groove.
I, unfortunately, feel that it's so iconic that if you did use it in a song, everyone would call it out straight away.
Great tutorial BTW!

Great lesson! Great work in explaining all the detail!

Just wanna let you know, when you play, the audio is clipping badly when your snare and hats hit together. Look forward to seeing your next lesson!

The Tai Chi approach to practising. Love it. If you really want to mess with your head, learn it right hand lead, the switch it up to play left hand lead. It’s oddly satisfying, and very hard. My left and right leads still sound totally different, but it’s given me a lot more confidence with my left hand.

Pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing. In a similar vein, could you please do a breakdown of Neil Peart’s signature ride cymbal groove which he played on many Rush songs?

Good stuff Dimitri, diggin it.

In the 80's I was promoted to 1st drummer in the school orchestra after the guy ahead of me graduated.  Filling his shoes wasn't easy because he was a pretty good Neil Peart clone that everyone talked about. I was more about being understated and preferred guys like Bruford.  Long story short: Rosanna was chosen in the repertoire.  GULP.  It's one of those songs that most people don't understand how difficult it is.  I ran to my drum teacher and he got me going by playing a shuffle on the high hat with RLL.  (Triplets) After, that I just hit the snare with either hand depending when it was needed.  Well... I practiced my butt off and it worked!  You may not nail the subtitles of Pocaro's way of doing it, but you can at least pull the song off in a pinch.  (About a good 2 weeks of the RLL shuffle).  Great breakdown on this terrifying beat!

Jeff played hihat with the tip of the stick on the very edge of hats. Sounds crisp and tight. And with really really good dynamic and shuffle.

The best tutorial

Yea this taps into a whole thing that beginners aren't even really able to hear yet. I teach high school audio production and have never had a drummer in our studio that could play these kinds of subtle groves even close to this level. But about 40 who certainly believed they could lol

This almost impossible to play on the Right way beast of a Shuffle, I had to learn in two month, in original tempo to pass a test at university. I did it. But I had to practice 3-4 Hours a day. It was such a big challenge. It felt good to achieve this goal, but I think it wasnt even close to jeffs feeling 😅

I’m trying to learn the purdie shuffle right now and I’ve got all the parts but for the life of me I can’t get the kick drum incorporated when I play it all together

Here's my 3,267 attempt. Let me jump on my kit with this new information.

Yeah buddy!!

1:16 I don't think this is correct. If you look reeeeeeally closely, he is playing with the tip very close to the edge of the hats which creates the crisp sound. Yes he has the down-up motion but he accents the 2nd note of the group, which is on the beat, and if you look veeeeeery closely he is slightly opening the hats on the beat which creates the dynamic effect.

How he did this so flawlessly is beyond human.

Is it that difficult? Yoyoka managed it at 8.  Without being able to read music in any form or english. Just by listening properly.

-  "How do you get good at drums??""
-  "Be slow. Be  patient. Be Methodical. Be Intentional."

- "Yeah but how do you get Reeaallllyyy good??"
- "Be Reeaallllyyy slow. Be Reeaallllyyy  patient. Be Reeaallllyyy Methodical. Be Reeaallllyyy Intentional."
