Even though external problems remain, suffering can be extinguished when the mind is steadfast. This demonstrates that suffering does not arise directly from events, but from attachment to the concepts of "self" and "mine." The practice begins with relaxing the body, avoiding tension, strain, or force, and using the breath as a focus. When thoughts wander, simply acknowledge them and return to awareness of the breath, without fighting the thoughts. Tranquility is the result, not something to be chased. Physical pain is an opportunity to learn the difference between sensation and mental suffering. The ultimate goal is to follow the Eightfold Path until practice becomes inseparable from life, and every moment becomes an existence within the Dharma.
