Mindfulness of breathing (Anapanasati) is a practice aimed at achieving understanding and liberation from suffering. It's not merely about sitting and observing the breath or studying theory. The practice must be guided by principles. The 16 steps of Anapanasati are linked to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) and lead to liberation. The results of the practice vary depending on the five faculties (Indriya 5) and the perfections (parami) of each individual. The core message is that suffering arises from clinging to the five aggregates (khandhas), creating a sense of self. When clinging occurs, external events become suffering. The practice involves being mindful of the body, feelings, mind, and phenomena, seeing them as they truly are, without fabrication or attachment to them as "self" or "mine," so that clinging decreases and suffering is ultimately extinguished.
