This is Bushman’s hole. On the surface, it’s just an unassuming, murky green pool at the bottom of a cliff face. Look under the water, though, and it changes entirely. The water is crystal clear, and it extends far deeper than the cliff face above. In fact, it is considered to be one of the deepest known freshwater caves on Earth. And that fact alone also makes it one of the most dangerous. In this video, we’re going to go over the horrifying incidents that have taken place here.

Obviously, this routine is a given for divers, but the sensation of feeling your air supply dwindling and the mask pulling itself tightly against your face as you inhale is difficult to describe unless you have experienced it firsthand. I do not panic easily during emergency situations, but that last gasp of air before having to hold your breath during the bottle exchange triggers one's fight-or-flight response. You have to maintain a calm presence of mind and focus on the task at hand in order to be successful. To be blunt: not everyone can handle this situation while remaining calm. Panicking during a fire equipment drill is one thing. You get plenty of second chances to try it again when you are ready, and to train your mind to focus. Panicking underwater is often deadly. Practice, training, and conditioning one's mind before entering into an actual life-or-death situation can save your life. RIP.
for nuno to have kept his calm when slamming deep into mud at over 250m water depth and under nitrogen narcosis, to get out of there, then go to the very bottom of that pit and then to successfully do his decompression stops for half a day...
