This certainly is a creative solution for a frequent problem. While I prefer cleaner shots myself, I often also hesitate to remove photo elements. Your approach definitely is food for thought and inspires further experimentation. Thanks for that!

I think reducing the opaqueness of the grass is way better than not having it in the image at all. Great idea.

Definitely like what you have done here. A middle ground, as you call it, is a great solution to the question of how to deal with distractions. And I think something like this would still be acceptable for photo contests.

Fascinating, and as I was one of those leaning towards leaving the grass in, you may have just found that rare "best of both worlds". The muted effect of the grass still being there (as well as your overall edit) adds to the integrity and feel of the photograph. As importantly, you've likely added to Adobe's software engineers' "to do list" for future Lightroom upgrades. In the meantime, where applicable, I'll just have to take the image back to Photoshop. nicely done and thanks.
