UNVEILING THE HISTORICAL TRACES OF MALAD TEMPLE IN LASEM, REMBANG
This time, I explored Malad Temple, a historical site located on the northern slopes of Mount Argasoka, in Gowak Village, Lasem District, Rembang Regency, Central Java.
Malad Temple is believed to be a cremation temple associated with Bhre Lasem Dewi Indu (Duhitendu Dewi) and her husband, Prince Rajasawardhana. Dewi Indu is said to have died in 1385 AD or 1304 Saka, and her ashes are enshrined in this temple.
Unlike the image of large, majestic temples, Malad Temple is relatively small and sits under the shade of twin banyan trees. This site is an important trace in understanding the past of the Lasem Kingdom, which was a vassal state of Majapahit.
During this exploration, I took a closer look at various parts of the Malad Temple, from the brick structure, the crematorium, the Brahmastana banyan tree, to the reliefs and statues related to the story of Dewi Indu and Panji Maladresmi.
On the eastern side of the temple, there is a carving depicting Sang Panji Maladresmi about to depart for war and bidding farewell to Dewi Purnamawulan (Dewi Indu). Meanwhile, on the western side, there is a depiction of Sang Panji comforting Dewi Purnamawulan, who is grieving over being left behind in battle.
According to my sources, the top of the temple also features a depiction of Sang Hyang Buddha Sakyamuni, while the lower level depicts Dewi Indu.
The temple we see today is the result of restoration. The existing structure features brick walls and a wooden crematorium with a payon roof.
This journey is not just about seeing an ancient building, but also about tracing the history of Lasem's past and the stories of the figures who lived during that time. 📍 Location: Gowak Village, Lasem District, Rembang Regency, Central Java
