Numerous Muslims from various regions make pilgrimages to the tomb of Mbah Ki Ageng Panohan. They come in droves, from Central Java itself, East Java, West Java, and beyond. If passing through Rembang, travel approximately 20 km south to Panohan Village, Gunem District, Rembang Regency, Central Java.
Kyai M. Muzakkin (Gus Zakky), the caretaker of the Dzikrussyifa' Asma' Berojomusti Islamic boarding school for mental and drug rehabilitation in Lamongan, East Java, and his students also visited the tomb of the renowned saint Ki Ageng Panohan, known for his charisma.
According to Gus Zakky, as he is familiarly known,
"Visiting graves is a teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is Sunnah. The purpose is to remind people of death. The purpose of this visit is to send prayers to the people of the grave by reciting the Yasin and tahlil," he said when met by media crews at the tomb of Mbah Ki Ageng Panohan on Saturday (January 25, 2020).
Furthermore, Gus Zakky, the chairman of East Java Corruption Watch (JCW) and the chairman of the State Assets Rescue Agency (BPAN RI), added, "Seeking blessings is also important. We are nothing. If we don't join the group of the saints and prophets, who will we join in the afterlife? This pilgrimage demonstrates our love for the heirs of the Prophet, with the hope that one day we will be gathered with pious people like the saints and, of course, with our great prophet, Muhammad, the Prophet of Allah, whom we all hope for," he said.
To learn more about Mbah Ki Ageng Panohan, who is buried in Panohan village, let's get to know him better.
According to his genealogy, Mbah Muhammad Sholeh, also known as Ki Ageng Panohan, is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet Muhammad, through the line of Sayyidina Husayn, son of Siti Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.
This is clearly evident in the genealogy displayed in the Joglo Perburan (resting place) south of Ki Ageng Panohan's tomb.
The inscription wall south of the tomb also displays the genealogy, stating that Mbah Kyai Muhammad Sholeh (Ki Ageng Panohan) was a descendant of Maulana Syarif Hidayatullah, also known as Sunan Gunungjati.
Kyai Muhammad Sholeh's tomb is located in the public cemetery in Panohan Village, Gunem District, Rembang Regency. Some sources state that Mbah Sholeh was a 26th-generation descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.
To enter the tomb, pilgrims must pass through a door that can only be passed by one person while squatting. The tomb's entrance is not made of wood or brick, but rather of tree roots that have formed a cave-like shape.
Inside the tomb, the floor is tiled. It can only accommodate a maximum of 20 pilgrims.
The atmosphere is undeniable: it's very serene and beautiful, making it a perfect place for riyadho (solitude) to draw closer to Allah SWT. Countless large, shady trees adorn the tomb complex, surrounding the tomb. And don't worry, the tomb has a place for ablution, a toilet, a bathroom, and a restroom, ensuring comfortable stays for pilgrims.
Initially, Mbah Sholeh's tomb was ordinary, like any other tomb. There was no Joglo (traditional Javanese traditional house) or other structures.
After many people from outside the area began visiting this site, the people of Panohan Village began to organize the tomb.
The tomb, which was previously overgrown with undergrowth and neglected, was transformed into a clean and beautiful place, allowing pilgrims to feel more comfortable and focused in their prayers.
According to legend,
Mbah Sholeh was not a local resident but a migrant from Cirebon, West Java.
During the colonial era, several kiai (Islamic scholars) from Banten and other areas in West Java resisted the invaders. When pressured, they retreated and went into exile to gather strength in Central Java.
Among them were Mbah Sholeh and his two students, Kiai Ali Mahmudi and Kiai Abu Bakar. These three figures later moved to Lasem, and over time, they also spread Islam in the Lasem region of southern Central Java.
These three figures were known not only for their powerful spiritual powers but also for their friendliness, making them well-received by the community and making it easy for them to spread Islam.
Mbah Sholeh is buried in Panohan (center), while his two students, Mbah Ali, are buried in G.
he concluded.
