Having track to be able to run your trains on is a must. These things obviously don't work without them, so they are a critical part to any railway model. Just like in real railroading, the track work is extremely critical when it comes to being able to run trains reliably. This is no different in model railroading. Its really important our track is placed in a way that we can stabilize it later on.

Once you get the ballast in, check the level across the track. Also look for dips in the track, that's where the mirror really comes in handy.
For those that don't know, the grade formula is simple. g=d/l where:
g is grade in decimal percent
d is difference in elevation
l is the horizontal distance between your two measured points
You can calculate any of the three if you have the other two.
