Planet of the Apes is a 1968 American science-fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, loosely based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle. The film stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly, and Linda Harrison. In the film, an astronaut crew crash-lands on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute primitives wearing animal skins.

So glad you're starting with the OG 1968 version. You're going to love it.

The Charlton Heston Sci-Fi Trifecta is Planet of the Apes, Omega Man, and Soylent Green.

I saw this in the theater when I was a kid; left me stunned.

This is the movie in 1968 that made my kid brain realize that motion pictures are a true art form. When Taylor speaks to all of the Apes for the first time, the entire Audience erupted like a Volcano. At the sight of the Statue of Liberty, and the sound of the waves during the end, with the credits rolling, the entire Audience was entirely silent, as we all sat there, stunned beyond belief to the magnificence we had just seen. You can hardly imagine the impact that this movie made back in the day. “Planet of The Apes” was “Star Wars” before “Star Wars”. By the way, Nikki you are ROCKING your “Clan of The Cave Bear” Look!

I saw this when it was first released in 1968. You could hear the audience the whole theater gasp at the ending reveal.

What a perfect way to spend Roddy McDowall's (Cornelius) birthday!

WOW! Two young people watching a movie from my generation and not only getting it but having serious in depth thought and conversation... You guys are awesome and refreshing.

During lunch breaks on set, the similar costumed ape characters would eat together chimps, gorillas and orangutans

"Going... going... gone." is not from this movie. It's an expression that has been around for a long, long time before this movie ever appeared.

One of the best sci-films ever made, with the greatest twist ending. I hope no-one spoiled it for you.

Oh my god!!! Please continue with the originals before getting to reboots! You’ll see what happens with Taylor and Nova 😉

One of the best Sci Fi Movies ever made!
Based on the novel, Monkey Planet, by Pierre Boulle.
It made $32 million dollars against a $5 million dollar budget.
It won an honorary Oscar for makeup at the 1969 Academy Awards.

Linda Harrison who played Nova, was a Fashion model and dating the Studio boss when she got the job. At the premier Taylor (Heston) didn't know Zira (Kim Hunter) because he'd never seen her out of makeup before. During the first half of the movie Heston was suffering from a bad case of the flu.

The screenplay of this movie was co-written by Rod Serling, a very famous sci-fi writer and presenter, especially with the Twilight Zone TV series. Look him up!

Zira and Cornelius. The most wholesomely adorable ape couple to exist even to this day.

The older movies give you a whole timeline to this universe. The movies themselves are hit and miss quality wise, but they are all essential to understanding the story. Everyone skips them and watches the new movies, but I think all of the old movies are a must watch before watching the new movies. Cheers!

Charlton Heston played Moses in the Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur in Ben-Hur, and as Cardinal Richelieu in the Three Musketeers

I hope you see all five original Planet of the Apes movies. They all connect to each other and will answer some of the questions you asked while watching the movie. Even the last movie connects to the first.

It's great to see a new generation discover this absolute classic! Definitely a movie that leaves you with a lot to think about. The late 1960s / early 1970s were a sort of "Golden Age" of smart, philosophical science fiction: Planet of the Apes, 2001, Logan's Run, Silent Running, Soylent Green. And on television, you had Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits...fantastic, mind-expanding stuff.

The original novel by Pierre Boulle is interesting, too. It's more openly satirical, and the ape society is a lot more advanced and modern. The ending is somewhat different from the movie, although it has an equally wild twist to it.
