i need this on prime time channel 4 immediately

2.2g of protein is what weightlifters use as the absolute upper limit of protein per kg to consume, with an understanding that the more you eat, the bigger the diminishing returns. I do a physical job, I noticed getting at least 150g spread out across the day, made me feel more recovered day to day. I'm an 85KG man, so if I aimed for that 2.2g mark, I need 187g a day, which is difficult to actually eat. I'm comfortable being in the 1.5-1.6 range when not on a AAS cycle.

The absolute cheapest protein source (other than roadkill) I found, is textured vegetable protein/soya mince. It contains 52g of protein per 100g, and can be bought for about 60p per 100g, making it near 1p per gram, unbeatable but requires more cost in flavouring as without it, it's awful. It's not quite as good as milk proteins, but it will get you where you need to go.

Soy protein powder tastes quite chalky, and the only way to make it appetising is to usually add milk to it. MPC 85 is substantially cheaper to buy than Whey, or Caesin, I would not recommend using any popular brand if you're trying to save money.

Add Protein to a product description, increase the price.

i remember seeing a protein tiramisu in lidl, lol

Lentils.

Great video Gavin! The only thing I'd add is that you've not factored in for lots of gym goers is protein to calorie ratio especially when trying to lose weight but maintain muscle OR even more difficult build muscle but lose fat. Which I think is important too! Cost per calorie per g protein would be interesting to see and I do imagine your findings would largely be unchanged

This is a very well made video; underrated channel

As someone trying to lose weight my go-to protein for lunches (I don't eat in the morning, just not hungry) is skinless chicken drumstick and skinless chicken breast (weirdly I can get the breasts cheaper per kilo if I buy a 650g pack vs a kilo pack, but I'm not complaining). Lean beef (or even just beef in general) is just too expensive per gram of protein for me to make it a regular thing at lunch.

Some chicken, black beans, sweet potato and frozen mixed vegetables with little to no oil generally gives me north of 70g protein for around 700 calories and going on 20g fibre depending on how much sweet potato/mixed veg I have any given day and, off the top of my head, it all averages out at around or less than £3 per meal. Not bad at all in my book for those macros, that much fibre (coming from 5-6 servings of vegetables; the mixed bag doesn't have an equal split by weight per veggie). For a while I was using chicken thighs as they're an even cheaper source of protein but even with the skin removed they were pretty calorific for how much protein they were giving. Whey and even vegan protein powders don't agree with me but even if I did I can't say I'd touch them, the price has skyrocketed in recent years and I've never been a fan of them.

fantastic video, appreciate the effort put in in order to inform people

Added protein Mars bar? Snickers got another rebrand?

Here in Antwerp, Belgium...

Grenade Protein bar, 20g protein: €3.50

450g of Skyr yogurt, 45g protein: €2.50

Protein bars are nice tho. Sometimes I just want a candy car.

2:10 ugh, carnivores. one of the worst health cults out there

Fantastic video Gavin and thanks very much for having me on. Very interesting conversation indeed.

main reason I buy added protein things... I am diabetic (and have been a couple of years) and it is better for me to have a protein bar than a chocolate bar (or as it would have been a few years ago,,, a pack of chocolate bars,...)

GLP-1 seen a big increase in costs of protein

Nice to come across a decntly researched and balanced review - so much better than all the AI generated slop that has no research and even less viewability. Keep up the good work - not too long before you hit the 100k

Can you share the dataset please! Other than price per protein, I also track the calories per protein, which may change the picture.

Yet another case of all problems being solved by eating more beans

What’s really important for healthy eating is protein per calorie……

1kg of legumes=99 pence, it's not that difficult to get cheap AND healthy protein into you. Gladiators didn't eat meat anyway in Ancient Rome.
