the Delux Brand which is a Lids brand  only has tomatoes in them . nothing added . the cherry tomatoes in a tin are superb for a sauce under £1

The amount of excess toms out of my polytunnel each year gets frozen and made into sauce. Now I’m glad I’ve always done it!

Don't go by brand, check labels EVERYTIME. Same brands can and do change suppliers and recipes.

I always freeze tomatoes when they are cheaper and use them for cooking.

Bunalun (an Irish company) have organic tinned tomatoes and they are delicious and great quality.  Tomatoes are grown in Italy.

I use Mutti San Marzano whole tomatoes for my pasta sauces and yes they’re not cheap at £3.40 a tin, but they are completely delicious. On a different plane of existence to the cheaper brands.

Ofc different labels come from a single source. No supermarket is going to set up a manufacturing company to produce cans of tomatoes as their own product. This applies to most food whether it is beans, herbs, soups, cornflakes, jams etc etc.

You can label a product BPA free and use BPC instead which is apparently even more poisonous to human health.

Avoid chopped tomatoes altogether. If you must get tomatoes in a tin, buy the whole tomatoes in puree. They will be better quality and value and it is easy enough to break them apart in the pan.

🍅 Aldi's Cucina plum tomatoes - they're great. Tinned plum tomatoes always seem to be nicer - better quality than chopped tomatoes. I've always found that chopped tinned tomatoes have horrible pieces of tomato in the tin and the juice is watery! x

A summary of what are good, or not, would be useful

I used the same budget brand all the time. At certain times of year the contents are less red and more green and watery. I did try a few of the more expensive brands and found the same. Same contents, different labels? I switched to Lidl passata and have had no qualms since that day.

I once worked back in the 80's at a bonded warehouse where large vats of gin whiskey and sherry all went into different bottles, if you think London dry gin, Booth's and Gordons are all different they are not, same with the whiskies and sherry.  All different brands.

Acidity Regulators like Citric and Malic Acid are used to drop the ph of the product and stabilise micro activity.

I cook loads of fresh toms, garlic onions  sometimes with carrot and celery as the base sauce and then freeze them in portions ready to go.

Winter salads from Spain and also strawberries also employ workers, largely from Africa, in similar circumstances to Italian tomato growers.

It’s also 24 minutes longer than it needs to be.

I try to freeze home grown tomaties for wintef use .

I must take issue with the comments on the internal protection of the cans. It is not "plastic" but a carefully applied coating. The white coating on tomato tins has never contained BPA. Many cans simply use the internal tin coating of the tinplate, which actually helps preserve the typical colour of tomatoes. However, as most cans ,today, have an easy open end, the tinplate on the end, has to be protected with a lacquer coating, which is usually golden, and does not contain BPA.

Just got mutti canned tomatoes on offer pack of 4 for £5.25 and the difference in quality is unbelievable and my finished dish I made using them was so much more flavourful yes expensive compared to a supermarket own brand but I can see exactly why that is and the taste is next level
