We'll just take one each. 🕯️

It is the fairest sentence in the English language, and in forty years at estate tables it is the most expensive one I have ever heard spoken across a table. Two sisters. A pair of brass candlesticks on a mantel. Nobody raising their voice, everybody being good about it. And by the time I understood what had just happened, it had already happened.

Here is the part nobody says out loud. Your family is not going to fight about money. In the weeks after a death, the arguments almost never break out over the expensive things.

⭐ AND THE DETAIL THAT REFRAMES EVERYTHING: it is not value and it is not even love. It is arithmetic. A thing gets fought over because there is exactly ONE of it and a name is attached to it. A thing gets refused because there were TWELVE, and twelve is enough for everybody, and a thing that is enough for everybody turns out to be wanted by nobody. Every argument I have watched in an American house sits somewhere on that number line.

So this is not a walk through your house. I made that video. This is a count — seven things, sorted by how many of them there are:

🪑 The chair with the arm worn pale on one side, and why it is the only object in the house you cannot buy a sister out of.

📖 The Bible with the handwriting in the front — the strongest claim on everybody inside that family, the weakest claim on anybody outside it. And the loose papers inside it that fall out and get lost first.

🕰️ The tall clock in the hall that every single one of them wants and not one of them will take — plus the cheap little clock in the same house that is the one they are actually going to argue about.

🕯️ The ten-second test that tells you whether the two things on your mantel are a genuine pair or simply two objects that have kept each other company. If they are handed, you are not holding two objects at all.

🚫 And the honest half — the short list of what nobody is taking, including the category that gets decided by haulage rather than by taste. Haulage decides more of what survives in this country than taste does, and I would rather tell you than let you find out on the day.

I also put a fence around something I told you in the last video about breaking up sets. I got that right, and a great many of you heard it wrong, and at number one I say exactly where the line is.

Turn it over. Read the bottom. Believe what it tells you.
