I had actually been thinking of this recently. The brain will make small corrections to how you play based on your sound in comparison to the sound you’re thinking of in your head. I’ve been trying to focus less on mechanics and more on listening to my playing.

Your rendition of Danny Boy had my  eyes getting watery. Danny Bpu was the first song I played on my (then) new soprano sax. I went to my parents' grave and played it. It was one of my mother's favorite songs. I love the sound of a flugelhorn. There are times when I wish I had learned to play the trumpet and not gone the route of the tenor sax and then the soprano sax. What you say in this video makes a ton of sense for any wind instrument. If a player has no aim, it usually means that that player has no goals. If there are no goals, there is no direction. That person's playing will be all over the place and will progress slowly if, at all. When it comes to sound, you are spot on. I hear it from sax professionals all the time. They say, "Spend at least half of your practice time focusing on your sound." I do exercises and drills just for sound. Even when I'm playing scales, I'm thinking of my sound. When I play Danny Boy, I'm thinking of my sound. If you're doing a solo and have great sound, you can make a minor mistake like, missing a note and extremely few in your audience will notice.

I hope you are well and am wishing you all the best.

I always enjoy your playing.

Every time that I played well with a beautiful sound, it felt so easy, without many embouchure adjustments. Many players said that playing trumpet is not so different than talking.... Its like you said, you have to focus on the sound, like singing.

Excellent 👏🏼🫶🏼

It's difficult to explain things when we don't have the language and words to communicate it,  or understand what someone else says. If we could find some words to describe the feelings going on from the muscles right at the bottom, in the space behind your teeth your tongue can feel.
It's great to hear you attempting to explain it. I have a suspicion we need to pay attention to what the psychologists investigating metacognition and the role of the hippocampus and amygdala are doing. There's quite a lot of useful research going on in music psychology both on orchestration AND neuron conceptualisation.

Amazing tone...! Which model of flugelhorn is that (I know its  you but just curious)

It's fascinating to me that you say your lips are 80% of how you sound; I've been told the opposite. I've been told that the air does all the work and the lips just react to it. That's at least how Stamp taught it, and it's seemed to work for me just fine. If I force my lips to do things, the air doesn't flow, but if I focus on how my air flows, then my lips will respond. There's a story I was told about Bud Herseth; he got into a pretty bad car accident and had his teeth and lips messed up bad. As anyone would, he thought his career was over. But after a few months (or years, I forget!), he was back to playing principal at the level he was. The funny thing here is, he couldn't feel his lips at all! He just knew what to do with his air, and it worked! So PERSONALLY, I disagree with the statement that the lips are like 80% of your sound, but if that way of thinking works for you, KEEP IT UP!

I highly recommend trying to get out to a professional orchestra and hearing how powerful the core sound is in those players even at ppp.

Disrespect to the person that said first
