God bless you for articulating your appreciation of Aaron Pierre's fine-tuned change in performance the more liberated from John's programming he became in the latter half of the series. The newer self-assured portrayal was beautifully done by Aaron. So moved by John citing his new oath & Halogram's last words to him. Loved this show.💚

Loved the show & loved your aftershow...looking forward to next show you do this with

I enjoyed the series, great writing ❤

I f❤ckin loved this entire series, but, the ending was a whole different level. What a penultimate finale. Great solo review / discussions, Rocha

Could imagine a Season two where Sinestro's replacement, Katma Tui confronts John about Sinestro's location which leads to romantic sparks and their cannon marriage...

John should let Superman give Earl a home in his Fortresses of Solitude.

I cried a lot in  this one
1. His last words were I love you before he get shot Hal finally found something to love

2. I think John didn’t want to recharge the ring cus he didn’t want to let Hal go

3. Which broke me was when Hal said he frizzed out and didn’t know his last words which I think he was lying and then says I love you to Junior.  Full booga and tears cry

Thank you lanterns good tv is not easy and this show is top tier

The show’s real strength is how it uses the idea of “Lanterns” as metaphor and leans in hard. The lanterns being the ideas we aspire to, the heroes who embody them, and the ones who guide us, the hopeful elements in dark times, and also vice versa. There are so many places they can go with those themes in the future.

My weird random takeaway from the finale is that Noah might be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life. John didn’t exactly tell him whether or not he was going to kill him after the game.

What an episode, though. Powerful, relevant, emotionally satisfying stuff. The perfect summation of the exploration of masculinity and the themes of fear and how those intersect.

The thing with Bernadette…yes it can be read as “my job is done”, but also as “I can love my son”. She’s not at peace now just because he’s now the GL, but because he has shown that he still loves her despite what she put him through and she might now be able to show him. That was a really powerful moment too.

John gave Maggie money which she can use to start rebuilding the town. No one rebuilt because there was no money to. I think the idea is she had a choice to make there. Probably could have been a little clearer.

That “this lantern’s light” means “My lantern’s light.” Chef’s kiss

Lianna told John that if he said the oath, he’d then be Green Lantern and have replaced Hal. Sinestro said the same thing about erasing Hal’s backup.

I think there’s a chance that since he didn’t say THE oath, that he’s not technically a Green Lantern, so the Halogram is still in there potentially. Gotta believe it’s also backed up somewhere other than just the ring. The backups are an oversight thing with The Guardians. Probably stored somewhere.

I dearly love the Halogram, but I think there’s a chance we’ve lost Hal for good. I think it could become almost schtick if you bring him back now. He passed the torch and found peace, at least in a sense. I know people are theorizing Parallax, but I suspect that’s more Sinestro’s path.

I half expected some scenario where John confronts Kerry about being the murderer only to have to fight off Manhunter Noah who would be trying to protect her like she was protecting him by silencing Hal. In that way I saw that as a space where a finale wrapped everything up that we got with more action than we got (Noah's manhunter origins exposed, Kerry's guilt, Hal's discovery being the motive, and John getting the ring), and having the same outcome: Noah not actually being the same type of Manhunter and being given a chance to be good instead of destroyed.

Would that have gotten in the way of the other thematic undertones and emotional story beats they wanted to end with? Maybe. Would it have been too much budget to have another CGI super battle? Maybe. I can see why they made the finale this more introspective reveal.

It leaves things open as well to pick back up these threads on the big screen:
1. An element of fear is in John's lantern specifically, a lantern Sinestro could be after later to channel through a custom ring that then channels Yellow.
2. Manhunter tech, or Sinestro's tech can restore Hal's body, but they'll need to get his actual consciousness from the Halogram - this actually could get us the Hero Hal instead of the Jaded Hal (if they choose to say what could be inferred: that unlike what they think they knew about the backup process, that John's unique connection to the ring does not erase Hal's backup).
3. Now, because every blessing can be a curse in stories like this, getting back Hal doesn't mean sunshine, puppies and rainbows; if it is via Sinestro's machinations, it will be a corrupted Hal that can go on to reveal he is puppeted by Parallax (that's a big screen story, not HBO, IMO). Likewise, if Sinestro needs Manhunter tech for Hal's restoration, we don't get Noah failing, rather Noah being exploited and slaved to his Manhunter programming.

Having told John's origin like this actually leaves room for a movie to pick up without needing to watch season one to understand who each character is: it can quickly reference that Sinestro is a former GL that was once imprisoned then broken out and left of a decimated planet by a precursor to the person (Noah) that he hunts down to use in his quest for revenge against the Guardians.

Just wanted to say the image of Aaron Pierre in the video thumbnail looks like Buju Banton.

Loved the finale it’s all about the characters dealing with complex emotions. I loved Jon’s rebellion at the end taking earth from Guy. I loved the idea of accepting that fear is part of being human and does not make us weak. Accepting his mom even though she lived her life in fear was beautiful allowing her to finally relax. I loved the idea of overriding your external programming in order to self actualize your destiny.

I enjoyed this whole season, disagreed with the criticisms of money saving and half assing it, but the finale failed for me...

Hal, being killed for trying to avoid another manhunter situation, killed by somebody who loved him having an emotional outburst(out of character btw, son or not, the sheriff always stayed firm but calm), AND that person getting away with it with no punishment was weak as hell.

I'd rather her have killed him cold with no emotion for her son.

Should John take the name of Green Lantern or something else in that milieu such as Sentinel, Power Ring or Ringslinger?

Excellent storytelling!
At the core of it all, Hal’s story was a heartbreaking tragedy of someone holding on too tight. John’s story was about finding his own way regardless of what others tried to make him.

Really well said Mr Rocha

Tom King said “The whole idea of this show was that John chooses the ring at the very end. And that’s new to Lantern lore. We wanted to make John a Lantern that was part of the Corps, but also a little bit above the Corps. What you’re seeing is John Stewart going from guy who could have the ring to the only person who should. ‘Cause like I said before, Lanterns are cops, John Stewart is a superhero.”

And that whole quote perfectly captures why Jon Stewart is, was, and always will be, my absolute favorite Green Lantern!

Excellent review. I knew you would understand the deep messages the show gave us. From embracing your fear, breaking your programming and charting your own journey. As a mother of grown children, I got teary eyed at the end scene with his mother. You’re always holding your breath for your kids. You have moments when you can exhale but you go back to holding your breath.

I had goosebumps when Jon flew for the first time. Loved the finale.

I liked the series but didn't love it. Also the aliens were going to attack the town anyway and probably would have caused more damage not saying he is innocent just not as guilty as some are saying.

I thought the show was good and told a really interesting take on the green lantern mythology. I enjoyed it and the show had some of the best written scenes and moments in a comic book show since the Penguin imo. I do wish we got to see John in a suit and that some more budget was put into the action beats like a flashback of Hal in action as a green lantern being this hero we were told he was especially since we saw his worst moment. I do feel like Hal deserved better for how well acted and casted he was. Aaron Pierre blew away my expectations for him as John Stewart. I feel like they did a great job showing his origin in this universe. I would say he deserved a suit up scene and it sucks we have to wait until man of tomorrow to see him again.
