This episode is a foreshadow of what's happening in the USA in 2026. We have our own Peter Vollmer living in DC right now.
I'm 68 and will be 69 at the end of December. I remember starting to watch The Twilight Zone as a child probably during season 3. I remember watching almost all of the 6O minute shows.
I never realized until now watching this reaction video that the music playing while Ernst lay dying after being shot is played by a cello, the very same instrument Ernst plays. 😢

Came out in 1963 - and months later that same year - your President was assassinated Edited - sorry I mean the year it was set in

The main character here also seems to be the inspiration for the Supergirl TV series character Benjamin Lockwood, also from the comic book, mixed with a bit of an early Pete Hegseth {FOX News era}. Instead of Hitler, Benjamin {Agent Liberty) kills immigrant aliens, and helps Lex Luthor to take over the White House, by Season 4, Episode 22. By that time, he is already released from prison for committing the killings, by the president, and becomes head of the D.E.O.

The murder in this episode loosely relates to AH falsely claiming he was attacked and several of his high ranking people were injured or k/illed during the night of the long knives. H was then able to build protection around himself. He was also able to clear out opposing voices to his new regime.

This one is also a lot like the Stephen King novela and subsequent film, "Apt Pupil".

I always appreciate this show when it really has something to say and this might be my favorite episode. Just as true then as it is now. "He's alive because through these things, we keep alive." Always gives me a chill.

Dennis Hopper is just amazing in this. What a great actor!

Chilling. And all too familiar.

Years ago, worked a fundraiser for a Jewish organization. Joel Grey performed, singing traditional songs, some of which were in Yiddish. There were many old people in the audience. Some of them had numbers tattooed on their forearms. One of the most chilling things I've ever seen.

That was Dennis Hopper playing the lead role.

Rod Serling grew up in a Jewish household. His objections to the Holocaust appear in several TZ episodes, and are very evident here. The idea of Hitler being some sort of immortal demonic being who resurrects himself whenever he feels the conditions are ripe is unsettling. Serling carried more of these ideas not only into the fifth and final season of TZ, but into his next series "Night Gallery", which is at least worth sampling, particularly the pilot.

This episode brings me to tears every time, but now it just scares me. Too close to current times.

Outstanding early performance by Dennis Hopper.
Recent history repeats about every 80 years (one long lifetime).
80 years ago, WW2 ended.
About 80 years prior, end of the American civil war.
About 80 years before that, revolutionary war.
And here we are today. Compare Hitler's initial advice to today's rhetoric. It's a formula that turns ordinary people into monsters.

The second episode that Rod tried to expand to feature length. Since it was already an hour he just needed to add a plotline about the FBI.

Welcome back......to the Twilight Zone!!!!! Thought you might be done with the zone, but glad you are not....a tough episode to come back for....

Is it just me, or does this scarily sound familiar today?

@fromthesidelines 1 day ago

20:17- "Where will he go next, this phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a previous nightmare-– Chicago? Los Angeles? Miami, Florida? Vincennes, Indiana? Syracuse, New York? Any place, EVERY place..... where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry – HE'S ALIVE. He's alive so long as these evils exist, remember that when he comes to YOUR town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault, on a people or any human being. He's alive because through these things-- we keep him alive."
