First of all, the Beatles didn't start in 1963, they had been playing together since the late 1950s, which led to their tight, professional image.  More than likely, the writer was either in their teens or imaging that the narrator in the song was a teenager.  The majority of their first fans were teenaged (or younger) girls and these are the kind of songs that were played at high school dances.  The Beatles were playing to their audience and we really never thought it was creepy.

For the 100th time, old songs mention 16 and 17 years old because they were WRITTEN FOR 16 and 17 year olds to buy. What 16 year old wants to jam out to a song about falling in love at 32 with a guy you met in a grocery store?

Paul wrote the song when he was 17-18. They sang this song for years in their shows before it was recorded in 62'.

This was the early “Beatlemania” days in 1964. One year later their songwriting began to mature, and from 1966 thru their breakup in 1969 they don’t even sound like the same band. Every step of the way, The Beatles cut the edge and everyone else struggled just to keep up.

Real music. Just 4 guys and their magic. I was there then, and still love The Beatles!

Since I'm old as dirt I can tell you that in 1964 nobody was surprised if a 17 year old girl dated a 20 year old boy. My mom and dad were married when he was 21 and she was 16. They stayed married for 62 years until he passed. 😊

Dang been listening to the Beatles all my life and I still am always amazed at Paul’s bass. His bass lines are insane. He plays bass like a guitar. His licks are crazy

They recorded this album in one day! That’s mind boggling.

Paul was 19-20 when he wrote this song. So there was nothing to complain about.

The age of consent in England in the 1960s was 16, so cool your jets people.

Paul is doing lead vocals, the high-pitched, Little Richard-influenced Whoos, and the James Brown-type screams-- all of it, except the back vocals. As you continue your Beatles journey, you'll hear Paul do this frequently.

There were always profession songwriters.  "The Beatles" were unusual because they, and few others, wrote their own music.

I was born 1954. In 1966 with friends singing our lungs out Beatles walking home in the early night. they were the days/

They were never a boy band they were always a group . They changed music with their talent, charm , humour and were not scared to change boundaries and played so many styles, The Beatles are their own genre. You'll be astounded by how fast they changed from writing catchy so called pop songs to psychedelia and rock in 8 years as you go through the albums chronologically.

It’s a memory. He’s not singing about chasing a seventeen year old right now. A sixty-something could sing this song because it’s a MEMORY of something that happened decades ago.

Paul is the bassist, George played lead, John played rhythm guitar, and Ringo played drums.  They all sing and harmonize.  The early stuff is Lennon/McCartney collaborations.  George came into his own later in their career.  Greatest band in my humble opinion.

George Harrison was 14 years old in 1958 when he joined the band. They started as the Quarrymen, and changed their name to the Beatles in 1960.

My Brother this is an endless rabbit hole and i’m glad to see your venturing ! ✌🏻❤️🇺🇸

Going on about the lyrics “she was just 17 if you know what I mean” is the clearest example of not seeing the forest for the trees in the way I think I’ve ever come across
