Oreca 07: so good it turned an entire category into a spec series. And it's quietly one of the most successful and dominant cars in endurance racing history. It was only 38 minutes away from winning Le Mans OVERALL in it's debut year.

coincidentally stumbling on the new regulations 3 years before they happen sure helps development, FIA didn't think that through before they chose the dimensions

I'd love to see a video about the aerodynamic issues of the other P2 chassis and what was done to improve them!

@sdx3918 1 year ago

probably one of the best racecars ever made in the history of motorsport considering it literally monopolized an entire ruleset in an era where variety is always a top priority especially in endurance racing.

ORECA has exceptional build quality, that makes a huge difference. It has a much wider setup window than the other cars and has much fewer suspension options for setup.

The Ligier could be made to work on smooth, high-speed tracks with little ride height variation for a few laps, but once anything changed, you were screwed. Beyond that, they were a nightmare to drive. No matter what, it had a super fast turn-in and then went immediately to understeer. It was a treat.

“Four approved chassis manufacturers…”
was a huge mistake for LMP2. The period just before that was more interesting & fun.

Oreca 07 is capable of doing 3:24 at lemans, which is super fast consider the price you pay.

Honestly this is such a fantastic racecar - Super reliable, easy to setup, great drivability & amazing speed at a very reasonable price. I can see why a race team would love it.

Oreca is the GOAT of LMP2. I am surprised that there aren't more Oreca based LMDh hypercars.

To answer the title - I drive Oreca because it has great features and handling. Can take it to shopping or commuting to work etc love it

Great timing of this video - with the 2028-32 chassis and powertrain awards announced by ACO today:

“The modernised, simplified new-generation LMP2 class will be introduced in 2028. The two chassis constructors are: Oreca and Ligier. Gibson will continue to be the sole supplier of engines, and Xtrac for transmissions for LMP2”

LMP2 at the past is FASTER than LMH/LMDh nowadays.

LMP2 past 920 kg, 600 hp

LMH/LMDh 1030 kg, 670 hp

Current LMP2 looks slower because FIA/ACO cut down their power to 540 hp, not full 600 hp spec.

As I understand the updated Riley/Multimatic was never actually raced as an LMP2, but that update package was applied to the Mazda DPi when Joest/Multimatic took over from Speedsource/Riley. Which that transfer boosted the performance of the car by quite a lot to making it I believe the outright DPi lap record holder at quite a few tracks. It really makes me wonder what that Multimatic Evo version of the Riley would have ended up doing, because I think they had the possibility of being extremely fast.

I always loved the Dallara and Ligier chassis, so its a shame we cant see these in action much anymore. I hope they, including Riley, get the chance to improve more.

@christopherc7075 1 year ago

I think the success caught them by surprise too. I remember that had a huge celebration when they reached 100 cars sold, which to be fair is a big number for an obscure manufacturer, but I'd imagine that's going to be eclipsed soon since they continue to be dominant...

Just look at that car! What I would give to be able to drive one!

I love your content mate, it’s been almost 2 years I’ve been subscribed to your channel and honestly every video i watch no matter the length teaches me so much, i absolutely love how you managed to make understanding the aero of a racecar so simple to learn which in turn has made me a quicker driver on track. Thank you for the knowledge and keep giving us these kind of videos. Clinically underrated automobile channel

I'm into the sport only for 2 or so years, following WEC then ELMS. For some reason, Oreca 07 intrigues me. I know, I know, unpopular opinions for those who dislikes spec.

Also, Inter Europol Supremacy 🔥
