Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Homeland Security Today’s #AmericaAfter9/11 Living History Curriculum is preserving the firsthand experiences of those who responded that day and the leaders who built America’s homeland security enterprise in its aftermath.

Created for students, educators, civic organizations, and lifelong learners, the project tells not only what happened, but why America changed—and why so many of the institutions, policies, and security practices we know today exist.

In this session, we examine one of the most visible transformations to American life after 9/11: how the attacks fundamentally changed air travel and aviation security. Holly Canevari, former Deputy Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, reflects on the creation and evolution of TSA and the development of the security systems designed to protect America’s transportation networks.

Canevari discusses how the attacks exposed vulnerabilities in aviation security and led to a fundamentally different approach to protecting air travel. She explores the development of TSA, the evolution of passenger and baggage screening, and the continuing challenge of strengthening security while balancing efficiency, evolving threats, and public trust.
Her perspective helps explain why air travel changed so dramatically after September 11, how TSA became a central part of America’s homeland security enterprise, and how transportation security has continued to evolve in the 25 years since the attacks.

Canevari brings experience from across government and industry to this conversation. In addition to serving as TSA Deputy Administrator, she served as Chief of Staff in the DHS Office of Policy and as Senior Professional Staff for the House Homeland Security Committee. On September 11, 2001, she was working as a Government Relations Representative for United Technologies Corporation.
