I had a drug problem i went to my boss and confessed. He put me thru rehab on his dime. The day i got out. He sent me to a second rehab because he read one time isnt enough. Kept my bills paid. So my family didnt suffer. That was 10 years ago. I still work for him. Ill never leave him. He saved my life. My family. My career. Got me help before the police caught me screwing up. If you have a problem ask for help you might be surprised on how much help you get.

"We call it a piss test"
I appreciate you letting us in on your secret technical pilot talk

The fact they literally have him the opportunity to just go home and call in sick, and he still chose to try and fly is the cherry on top.

Imagine you're sitting waiting for your plane to take off and the PILOT FULL ASS GETS ARRESTED

I threw away a trucking career due to drug addiction. I could have sought help anytime over several years up until I got caught with a random test. Unfortunately it took over ten years after losing that career before I was ready to get help.

Going on 6 months sober. Getting help was the best decision ever.

Gave up alcohol totally when wife had pregnancy complications during the night and doctor attending at home told me to drive her to hospital. The look of sheer contempt when he realised I was impaired was the impetus for me to stop. Our son is 36 now and I have never missed drinking.

The level of awareness at this airport is IMPRESSIVE. Kudos to the staff for holding their pilots accountable and keeping passengers safe.

This dude seriously has the gift of turning one sentence of information into 26 sentences.

I talked to a captain that failed an alcohol test at a cargo airline.  All of his certificates and ratings were taken away.  After going through the HIMS program, he was allowed to retake all his tests.  I can’t imagine having to start all over like that, but give him a lot of credit for making it back into his career.  He is now a company spokesperson for the HIMS program.

My neighbor's married son, who is a lawyer, had a drug problem. His law firm's senior partner paid for rehab. He was in and out of rehabilitation several times but eventually straightened out his life. He even worked at the same rehab facility for a couple of years. He is now back with the law firm. I see him when he visits his father, and it is clear he has turned his life around.

Former FA, had a pilot come on the plane and you could smell the booze in him. I was Senior that day, went to the gate agent and said we are not taking off. This was back in the 70's, they came on the plane and took him off and he was pissed.  Said he would get me fired. Sadly, it was him that got terminated.

I really hate seeing people not only destroy their career but put other peoples lives at risk. There’s no excuse

I worked in a few hospitals and we a 9 year old boy with appendicitis. Our two local surgeons were on vacation so we had an agency surgeon. As he was scrubbing up, one of our surgical nurses smelled alcohol. She called our CEO who in turn called our surgeons and, thank God, one of them had returned the day before, so he came in and did the procedure. Asshole surgeon refused any sobriety tests so he got sent packing back to California. Our surgeons don’t take vacations at the same time anymore as this is a small hospital. I hope the Doctor got help but he endangered a little boy and our nurses are rockstars!

My coworkers at the hospital where I used to work had to report a doctor who was about to go into surgery. It's a tough call, but in situations like these, when lives are at risk, it's the only logical thing to do.

I am an addict. I crashed out at work bad, confessed to my boss about my addiction and the support I had from him, upper management, and my whole family was unexpected... Im proud of the LEO for his professionalism, dont feel embarrased or shame for admitting an addiction... Third month sober and always thankful for the second chance they didnt owe me

I admire how sharp the guys on the first checkpoint were.

I have a alcohol addiction and am a international tower climber and I finally blew the whistle on myself and asked for help. All my management all the way up to the base commander were more than supportive and gave me the time off to go get treatment. No judgement just concern, and full support. If you need help and you ask for it before you cause a problem you’d be surprised how many people you really have in your corner. 72 days sober and back to work. Y’all can do it.

Also you gotta remember addiction is recognized as a chronic illness, so get the help you need.

When the Detective says call in sick, that is a pretty good indicator you should...

It's amazing how quickly staff picked up on the fact that this guys behaviour was off. Very impressive.

Thirty days in rehab is nothing. We sent our son to rehab and he wanted to come home after 30 days, saying that everything was better. Since we had sent him halfway across the country, we told him fine, but that he was going to have to find his own way home - so he stayed. After 60 days, he asked if he could stay another month and that last month made all the difference in the world.

That was 10 years ago. He did relapse for a very short time about four years ago, but, other than that, thank goodness, he has been clean. For the year or so before his relapse, he didn’t really go to AA but now he goes five or six times a week. That, I believe, has made all the difference in the world. We are very proud of him.
