Very underrated champ! Larry truly won the fight but definitely had his hands full. But oh that ninth round!!! Goosebumps for bravery. That's what made Holmes Champion for so long.
This was a very underrated fight and probably the most dangerous in Holmes career. Holmes took on the man who replaced him as Ali's sparring partner at Deer Lake. For one, this fight was unfair to Larry because it was scheduled for 12 rounds instead of 15 rounds. The stupid WBC panicked after the Kim fight and that wasn't a WBC fight. Anyway, this fight defined Holmes legacy in retrospect because it was Witherspoon who eventually won the title defeating the hyped Greg Page and also Tony Tubbs. Everyone talks about Norton, Shavers, Ali, and Cooney making Holmes great; but you have to include Mike Weaver, Witherspoon, and Berbick too. They found ways to win titles after losing to Holmes.
This was Larry's toughest fight since his 3rd title defense against future heavyweight champion Mike Weaver. In his 15th title defense against future heavyweight champion Witherspoon, Holmes once again proved why he is 1 of the 3 greatest heavyweights in boxing history. Despite being past his prime, Holmes demonstrated his incredible versatility and great heart by switching from boxer to slugger in the 9th round. For whatever reason, most young boxing fans place little to no importance on boxing intangibles. They get all excited about Tyson's greatest knockout wins and/or Lewis' longevity, but give a free pass to both men getting knocked out in their primes by journeyman heavyweights and NEVER winning a fight after being knocked down or behind on points.
My son trains at witherspoons, run by Tim Jr. The champ never stopped training and is in shape to this day at the age of 65,with all his marbles. It still blows my mind seeing a living legend training right next to his fighters.
I love Larry Holmes. He was one the greatest boxers ever. Also, he is one classy man and he never made excuses. Everybody in Easton, Pennsylvania respects him and embraces him. God Bless Larry Holmes. What a Champ!
Larry Holmes is one great boxer , very underappreciated unfortunately . His era came right between two greatest eras in boxing , and it is sad that one of the greatest boxers in history never got his credit from the fans ...
Holmes when hurt may have one of the most unique comeback abilities in heavyweight history. The 9th round was definitely heading into 10-8 territory even without a knockdown, as Witherspoon was knocking the champion from pillar to post. Larry fought back more than gamely, hurting the challenger to the point it prevented a knockout and allowed Holmes to get into the last three rounds instead of suffering a 2 point loss or worse in round nine.
This fight is CRIMINALLY underrated..it was probably one of the 10-15 best heavyweight title fights of all time. It’s really absurd that there was never a rematch. A fight this good (and this close) that ended in a split decision should have gotten an IMMEDIATE rematch.
