The only blame to be had for the taxi medallion collapse in NY is the local government that created false scarcity in the first place. Uber was super nice when I came out, now it's just like a cab.

Yellow cab medallions were bullshit. So is the gig economy.

Doordash destroyed both ways. The finances of the people buying and the finance of the people driving

I hate the gig economy but cabs in ny absolutely always fucking sucked and were shady as fuck.

The gig economy for many people is like working for yourself, but you still have another boss who does not give a shit about you. All the risk and cost is on you. The perfect corporate model

The cab business needed to change. They sucked, they lied, and ripped off to many ppl. Happy to see them go.

@LordMcKrakenVonLittleBits 2 weeks ago

The medallion rugpull the city did was nothing more than a stock dilution disguised as "the next big thing". They knew damn well what they were doing .

Here’s the breakdown of my last Amazon Flex route ever.
8 hrs total
190 miles on my car
$188

Take off $56.40 for taxes.
Take off 104.50 for gas, car and maintenance.
(In California)

I made $28 for 8 hrs

The whole thing is actually quite funny, that people can be convinced to put thousands of miles on their own cars to deliver burritos across town and often out of town for $5.

I did Uber for a few months after I bought a car with the intention to offset the car payment with a few nights of work every month. The first week of driving for Uber was an amazing return of the effort for the pay. It fell off and never reached those numbers again. I literally was making $300 a night during that first week and then that was cut in half and never came close to those numbers again. I realized it was a scam and quit. Driving disrespectful drunk people around was my personal nightmare.

I swear the gig economy is some sort of mass psychosis, by the people doing it. Most the people I know who do delivery or Uber, act like it's some type of symbolic badge for how hard they're working. I know many who will legit turn down overtime from their decent paying job, so they can cruise around wearing their car out for $7-8 an hour. It's so strange. And if you point out the illogical math to them, they get angry like you're attacking their cult. Fascinating.

Not to mention people going into debt to use these services.

On the cab monopoly, I stand with most people that it deserves its demise.

Cabs should have competition or else a made up limit made it overvalued like what happened.

Had there been one or two competing cab companies then they all would have survived as they needed to weed out scam cab drivers who scam and overcharged tourists. With competition they would self regulate and prices would be fair.

The cab's monopoly allowed them to charge double or triple the reasonable price because they had no competition before ride sharing apps.

So the cab monopoly deserves its demise.

Everyone chased the easy money. Instead of focusing on community cornerstone industries. They looked after themselves without knowing how economy works.

@Derpy1969 13 days ago

The taxi medallion system was already a mega scam. Anyone can drive people anywhere. We did it every day. Arguing about needing a medallion for safety or training was moronic.

This gig economy is also a scam. Only corporations make the money.
