I was born and raised in Toledo. When I was a little boy growing up in Toledo in the mid 60s, Toledo was a beautiful metropolis for blacks. Most all the same neighborhoods shown in this video were very well kept by their beautiful black residence, and they were also safe places to live in, too. There were plenty of jobs, wonderful churches, new schools, black businesses and a rich wealth of black culture. Yes, back then, Toledo was a wonderful, beautiful place to raise a family in most all the neighborhoods seen in this video. Toledo began a steady decline in the seventies, and hasn't been the same since. Over the past over 40 years or so, the African American communities in Toledo have become extremely impoverished beyond recognition and also extremely depressing to see how far they have fallen. Well, I joined the US Army right after high school, Macomber, and never returned to Toledo as a resident. I still occasionally travel to Toledo to visit relatives. Currently, the traditional African American neighborhoods in Toledo aren't even a faint shadows of their former selves after all these decades of neglect. Sadly, I'm afraid that all those good old black neighborhoods, and also those blacks that reside in them have been forgotten and given up on by the establishment. The back communities in Toledo used to be so utterly vibrant and full of life with an abundance of nice, well kept homes and beautiful black families. All I can do now when I go back to my old neighborhoods in Toledo is squint my eyes and imagine I'm seeing them the way I remember them being when I was young and when Toledo was something very special.
I don't know what Toledo is like now, but it's the place the first family on my dad's side settled in once they got to the US from Germany. 4 generations of my family lived in a house on South Ave. It was one of those cute wooden houses built in 1908 for new immigrants who were working at the railway that used to be nearby. Nothing fancy at the time, but if you look at them now, they're gorgeous works of art with beautiful wooden interiors. If the house was taken care of, it should still be standing strong, with all of its original fixtures intact, as those houses were built to last.
That neighborhood is a little strange, though. It seemed like the streets were nice, but every so often a house would be burnt out or destroyed. The rest around it well cared for. There doesn't seem to be a trace of Libbey High School anymore, which 2 generations of my family attended and graduated from. I would've loved to buy our family home once my grandparents died in 2005, but would have had no way to support myself out there in Toledo. Fortunately, another family is still taking good care of it today!
Being from Toledo i would say you missed a lot. your video is mostly around Vistula Manor and the Madonna homes . What about the Wyler Homes or Ravine Park Village area ? Polish Village , Stickney Ave , Hawley St or Broadway and Western , South Ave . Detroit Ave , Door St ,
At the 520 time mark the yellow house on the right, was where I live from age 3-5 yo. I'm 48 now and left Toledo in 2004. It's wild seeing the poverty, drugs, and crime seep in the way it has. But in all fairness welcome to all major cities throughout America. Singing "" In the ghettos "". I plan on returning to at least the east side by Oregon. Call it what you will, but to me it'll always be home. And that just hits different imo.
We need, we need, we need is all they’re saying….their job is a paycheck and they are more complacent than what they say because they too don’t care about the death of their city, and I can just imagine the mismanagement of funds they have also done. They sound just as corrupt as the politicians.
Toledo has a nice indoor gun range at towers armory. When I got here I saw a sign that said you will do better in Toledo. I believed it. I am now. If youre looking for trouble you can find it anywhere. It's been a good place for me. If you want to cut expenses down& rebuild your life. You can do it here or anywhere.
