The Price of Negligence: Inside History’s Deadliest Industrial Disasters

Wild Weather

In our pursuit of global connectivity and industrial progress, humanity exists only moments from catastrophe. This episode of Mega Disaster investigates the harrowing stories of industrial failures where corporate greed and compromised safety cultures led to unthinkable environmental and human tragedies.

In this episode:

The Deepwater Horizon Blowout (00:01:04): Analyze the 2010 Gulf of Mexico disaster where speed was prioritized over safety, resulting in 11 deaths and the largest environmental catastrophe in US history.

The Chernobyl Meltdown (00:33:19): Revisit the 1986 nuclear nightmare in Ukraine. Discover how a flawed safety test and a hierarchical culture exposed millions to radiation and created a 20,000-year exclusion zone.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy (00:19:18): Journey to 1984 India to witness the world’s worst industrial accident, where a lethal release of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) killed thousands in their sleep.

Chemical Fireballs (00:04:07): From the West, Texas fertilizer blast to the apocalyptic Tianjin, China explosions, see how the negligent storage of ammonium nitrate and calcium carbide turned city centers into blast zones.

Explore the science of chemical reactions, the physics of nuclear cores, and the critical lessons we must learn to safeguard our future against the "unthinkable."

Corrupt. Dangerous. Typical. The powerful make devastating mistakes without ever considering who suffers. We see this world clearly, and we hate it for what it is.

one other tip, Acetylene is also unstable (~15psi+) so tanks have acetone in a sponge at the bottom to make it safe to store. Also why you never use tanks at other than vertical orientation, so the acetone isn't syphoned off as well.

Excellent présentation! I’m not a fan of these where the stories jump around - some minutes with one then jump to the next story then on to the next and eventually back to the first story - but I can put up with it.

The 'science of the unthinkable' indeed. The breakdown of the ammonium nitrate chemistry in the Chemical Fireballs segment was eye-opening. We often forget that these massive explosions start with small, avoidable human errors.

One correction about chernobyl:
(The control rods not being lowered) isnt what caused the explosion.
In fact the control rods was all lowered into the reactor at the same time and with rising temperatures and the rods at the same time created the explosion blowing the 10k pound off the reactor

It wasnt the rob not being able to go back its the fact they were tipped with grathite so as they were put back in it increased the power even more instead of lowing it....that on top of the cenon posioning and the water already being so hot vaporised the remining water and pop

Those caps from drilling for oil will eventually fail and when they do? Our seas 🌊 will be polluted for 100s if not 1000s of years

Criminals said they reached dangerous levels, let WE see CRACKS

The information was interesting, but it's very confusing. You talked about the BP DWH event, then Union Carbide and Chernobyl non-related events, followed by more BP DWH stuff. Next time try to keep related items together for continuity of information.

Ocean drilling should be BANNED!!!!!!!!

I wonder if that massive cloud of radiation that covered so much of Europe is a contributing factor to increasing cancer rates worldwide.

God be like: Go be fruitful by creating ammonia nitrate in order to multiply

Because it spreads it it doesn't put it out it spreads it why you think oil can burn on top of water this is so embarrassing even though I know what happened years ago but elementary kids know this

And I guarantee some idiots will say well that's a grease fire you should use water for. Oil and grease is oil oil is oil gasoline is oil is petroleum
