The first of two parts... Part 2 being the forward line, the manager and the game plan.

Here I assess the goalkeeping, defence and midfield, the pros, cons, what (and who) has worked and what (and who) has not.

Hey everyone. A couple of people have mentioned sound issues. It's working for me, but clearly something is amiss. Apologies if you are having trouble with it. I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again if I can figure out the problem. YNWA.

Outstanding analysis, Alex, very comprehensive! Ta! That would keep me on edge when Ali used to "play chicken" with the ball, but have noticed he no longer does that and is playing the ball out quicker, he is now nearly flawless! Absolutely love him and hope we extend him another 4 years or so! Not worried a lick about our midfield as Iraola will not only coach the players up for necessary skills and tactical understanding, but also find a rhythm and rotation as we will need them all. Trey is definitely ready and it will be important to not overplay him this year, don't want him to experience what Bajcetic and Bradley have. Am hopeful Grav will regain his form and confidence. Love the idea of a big back line, think it intimidating. With Ronnie, Jacquet, Virg, and Joe across the line ... with Leoni, 6'5", coming back and possibly Ndukwe. 6'6". after January? Thoughts? Cheers mate! YNWA!!!!

Detailed, thorough, insightful appraisal, Alex. We should all begin to appreciate the improvements Iraola has already incorporated into both the structure and playing style of the team. Given the present personnel, the team is already performing more effectively than last season, whatever metrics are used to assess the changes that are becoming more and more apparent. Iraola's influence is already increasing individual player performance levels. The careful use of the youngsters signals positive development of the first team squad. Iraola has harnessed his own infectious commitment to the game extremely well in the first weeks of his tenure at an elite club. It is reassuring as a fan to know that Iraola is already displaying his competence and that he is not overawed by the size of the task ahead. Thanks, Alex. YNWA

Interesting video. 2 great defenders we were lucky to get hold off . For the midfield whatever happens, with injuries and suspensions all of those players will be needed during the season

I wish the Kop would sing a chant for Iraola. He really deserves one and I reckon he would be made up with it.

Cheers Alex. Great content as always. We’re slowly seeing the Slot effect disappearing from the players (and the fans)! It’s been difficult to be optimistic after last season. Jacquet…if we can keep him injury free, we’ve got a good one there 😍
