16:43 - Why Fern Is So Tragic

Fern dying in the spot of the new tree shows how much he really is literally Fin. Shoko's death mirroring Fern's shows how Fern was once fin, and how Shoko eventually became Fern.

Fern: “There’s nothing you have that I don’t”
Jake: And I took that personally

Ngl I found it funny af when bmo just goes “I know that look, you just killed someone” then proceeds to blow their horn

yes a lot of people forgot or missed that Fern is literally a Finn from a different moment in time
the same one we saw all this time and he suddenly had people tell him "you're not Finn, this is Finn" and you look at that dobbleganger and your look at your hands that's studdenly covered in grass and you can't recall what happened
untill a bit later you remember your origin was the same bit you split and now this other version is claimed the real one and you don't even know if it's true but you feel terrible

16:55 it gets worse when you realize Ferns “mom” called him, “Grass Kid.” I know it’s out of ignorance, but man I’d feel hurt if I were in ferns shoes

Oddly, I think a major, consistent theme of this show is obsession and how it can take people to such dark places, along with the ways that some characters get out of those places.  The Lich, the Ice King, Simon, Finn on occasion, PB more than once, and a few I’m probably forgetting all struggle with and succumb to various obsessions, and the characters who live the least fraught lives are always those like Jake, who are better at accepting things as they are and not fighting past the point that becomes self destructive.   The whole kicker for the pillow fort episode was Finn thinking to hard about his relationship, to the point that he got genuinely depressed over a single flubbed joke.

imagine one day you wake up and right in front of you is an exact clone of yourself. you know you're you, but for some reason everyone you know and love treats you as if you're the imposter or some monster, and so you're forced to watch as this copy basically takes your place in life. you can't even do normal things like eat, drink, sleep, or even breathe. that is what fern went through

When fern is born he acts like young Finn (early seasons finn), ready to kill. His just young and confused and hot headed cause of his strength and seeking an outlet. Even though he has Finns memories he doesn't have the emotional moments that made Finn grow up and eventually they start having different memories. His just an immature Finn at the start and becomes fern later.

The moment where Finn cuts off the green knights head is a clear reference to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

IMO, by the time Fern died, he was no longer Fin, and I think he himself knew that. He's done so many things that the regular Fin wouldn't be able to; I mean, he IS the grass sword, afterall.

I'm following the thought of "Who you were yesterday, is not the same one as the you today."

I think his purpose was "to be used;" literally, all he was throughout his existence was a being manipulated by external forces, and that ties well into his ending, where he was planted in place of Fin's old home and carried a tool (a sword) that symbolizes his birth and story althoughout his life.

As a tree, he symbolizes life, home, and rebirth; as a sword: Fin, adventure, and the negative connotations of life.

Adventure Time was always a surreal experience. When I watched it back as a kid, there was this feeling of closeness that other shows didn't quite had; a tangible sensation of familiarity that created this bitter-sweet taste that felt so dear to me. Now that I'm older, I realized that taste was "Life."

i love how nuanced yet simple the episode following fern's death is. finn is forced to rethink when it's moral to kill. previously he just like. would only kill evil things, but now he's aware that there's more to it than that. there are grey areas, self-defense, clashing motives, and misguided people. and that realization comes too late when he finnalities his doppelganger

What makes me cry most is when Fern first woke up because Fern IS Finn (from the Prismo timeloop forced into the mold of a sword). Imagine waking up one day to be met with the sight of YOU with your loved ones all calling you a fake “you”. And once you try to live as you always have, just simply BE you, you fail, being out-done by the “real you”.

Fern didn’t deserve such the tragic hand he was dealt. His life and death will forever have a place in my heart, as my favourite Adventure Time character of all time

9:55 the grass demon has control of ferns arm which is more foreshadowing for how every fin is destined to lose their arm

i remember watching "together again" and questioning why fern was not present in the dead world, as im sure finn would have loved to reunite with him.

i realised, ultimately, that the answer is that fern simply isnt dead. with the fern tree still alive a thousand years later, and shermy finding the finn sword, it just more reinforces the idea that fern is still alive, in that sword, so many years later.

Imagine seeing someone being a better you than yourself , i would've got mad too

I love the “There’s nothing you have that I don’t” part with Jake launching Fern away, because in a way, that IS something that Fern doesn't have, it least not anymore: JAKE! Finn had Jake by his side almost his entire life, which is probably a big part of Finn turning out the way he has.

For some reason story of Fern feels similar to the episode when Jake lost his original form and couldn't became "same old Jake". Both rapidly changed really hard because of the powers they could not control, both tried really hard to pursue old selves and rejected the changes which turned out worse the more they tried. The difference that Jermaine helped Jake to understand that despite changing he is still himself and Jake becomes "himself" again when he stops trying to forcefully become "himself ", while Fern done everything to become "himself" only to change more and worse becoming something he doesn't want.

I kinda wonder could Jermaine help Fern if they met . Maybe he could give him new goal,or do what Fern likes just for himself. Jermaine also family to Fern, sad that we didn't see this interaction

crosses video out and writes “nevermind he got better👍”

Fern is literally the personification of imposter syndrome. He is an imposter in his own life; the problem is that it's true. The trope with imposter syndrome in most shows is that the character overcomes their doubt and accepts who they are, but with Fern it's just not possible. Outside the sword Finn had the willpower to control the parasite, but inside the sword, even before the parasite took over, he was losing the will to live. Watching someone else live his life, he knew it was already too late to go back. Fern realized it wasn't possible to live as Finn. Once he joined Uncle Gumballed, he started living the parasite's dream of being evil. In the end he tried to live both the life of Finn and the grass demon but in the end, even though Fern had become his own character, he knew it wasn't the life he truly wanted, but that was ok because, like he said in the closing section, Fern finally had control over his life.
