But while aqueducts of the ancient world stand as tourist attractions today, this piece of Brasilian history running over the Lapa neighborhood of Rio seems to repel visitors coming from all directions.

Welcome back! I went to the aqueduct last year. It was such a shame to see it in its current state. The area is really sketchy, lots of homeless campers with its associated drink and drugs. In the mornings many casual labourers gather waiting for work. Such a contrast from the skyscrapers a block away. Such potential, thanks for the vid!

I used to live in Lapa and I can confirm that your analysis is spot on. That big square is such as a wasted opportunity, bereft of shade and a prime mugging place. The city government needs to get those buildings on the derelict side restored, and maybe set up some kiosks, staffed public toilets and better landscaping in the plaza.
