I'm a ex-military Australian, we can own a gun here, just not an assault rifle. Also, you need a valid reason - self defence isn't a valid reason because no matter what, it's illegal to shoot a human here as you need to use proportional force when defending yourself.

So unless the person breaking into your house has a gun, you can't use yours. In case you are wondering: target shooting (as a gun club member), or hunting, (or farming), are all valid reasons for gun ownership. Bolt action rifles, shotguns, and pistols (under 0.45 calibre) are legal.

You can get the restricted weapons but only if you have special dispensation as either a collector or museum. My friends father has every weapon used by Australian military historically so qualifies as a collector/museum.

Personally, I don't own a gun. There's absolutely no need if you live in a large city. If I moved (back) to a rural area I'd get a rifle again but at my age with my infirmity that's not going to happen. A large property would be too much for me to manage alone.

A granny in Australia says...I'm crawling toward 80, and have LOVED and admired the talented Jim Jeffries since the first time he screamed for everyone's attention in Australia as a young stand-up.  He does his best to hide behind his "everyman Aussie" persona, but it is obvious that he has a mind like a steel trap, and the razor tongue to back it up.  Glad you are enjoying sharing the experience.

I know it’s hard for Americans to hear, but you cannot deny the facts this fellow Australian is saying. We love you guys & it breaks our heart to see what we grew-up thinking was the greatest country on earth tearing itself apart!

Your comment towards the end regarding people using knives when guns aren't accessible is possibly true! but lets face it, a knife cannot, and will not do the same amount of carnage as a high powered gun!! Like your reaction 👍

Jim Jeffries does a lot of great routines. I very highly recommend his 'Freedumb' and 'Taking An MD Sufferer To A Brothel'.

The whole "I need a gun for protection" argument instantly collapses when you realize that in every instance where a gun was dicharged, in only 4% of those cases was the weapon fired in self-defense.

We in Australia keep guns on the farm with the other rural tools, you want it in the suburbs find a gun range they have safes for members

I think the reason people from other countries know a lot about USA and other places is that at school we are well educated on other countries. I’m from Australia and I learnt a lot about other countries history and geography during school. Like it always surprises me when Americans and people from other places don’t know that Australia is basically same size as USA. Only difference is you guys have over 300 million people and we have around 25 million

Tim Minchin is both thought provoking and very funny. Usually infuses it into song

If you have a crazy neighbor, it pays you to know everything about him.

You’re totally right about “foreigners “ knowing our laws better than lots of Americans.

""if you don't know what a thesaurus is get a dictionary" .. that cracked me the fuck up.. thanks for this one MMBxMOB

Glad you played part 1 and part 2 of Gun Control. Jim does pick apart the silliness and hypocrisy of convention. He does make you question the "rules" we live by and leaves you feeling entertained and perhaps a little wiser. Check out taking an MD sufferer to a brothel, God is  Drunk at a Party, or Freedumb.

There are storytellers, single line joke tellers, and then you have, as you said, philosophers.

Delivery by the comedian is crucial, absolutely.

Always punch up.

Tim Minchin for sure Prejudice or Lullaby which is my personal favourite and saved my sanity with my first born 😂

15:14 lolTHIS has been my argument for YEARS! To amend something means to change it!!!

UK Comedian, Lee Nelson explained it brilliantly "If you have a phone [gun]; are you more or less likely to make a phone call?"

You’re so right. I’m Australian and I am sure I know more about how your country works than a majority of your countrymen.

Jim is great, so funny 😁 You should check out his bit Freedumb.

Tim Minchin will make your mind thinking "Storm" is a good starter for him
