I'm finding, travelling around the country that so many hatch and chevron type markings were painted 20 years ago and have virtually disappeared. Last week, I was travelling on an A road near where I live, when a woman approached a junction, effectively a crossroads  and just carried on pulling out. I swerved and avoided her, but when I went past the same spot later on, her stop lines were completely worn away. I've also found myself stranded in a yellow hatched box that was virtually invisible. Just more signs of the decay of the UK sadly.

Thanks for clearing those points up. 70 years this year so brushing up on my driving practice.

what I was taught is "a solid line is like a wall. but ... if the road is blocked you can cross it, carefully"

I thought road markings were being abolished - they are disappearing so rapidly around the country. Is the "paint" no longer available 😂😂😂

There is an exception, if you look on The Traffic Signs Regulations And General Directions 2016 schedule 9 part 6 item 23b it looks like hatch markings with a solid white line so you’d think rule 130 applies to these but actually rule 129 applies to these as they are an alternative form of double white lines, so you’re allowed to cross these to enter adjoining premises or a side road, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, an electric scooter being used in a trial, horse or road maintenance vehicleif they are travelling at 10mph or less.

Very much appreciate your vids.  An excellent catch up and keeping up to date on Laws and practices. Thanks

Completely agree with the learner’s decisions… my take on it is to imagine the solid whites lines around hatched ot chevron areas as brick walls.

Nice clear descriptions.  Thanks.

My concerns with  markings of the types shown in the video (especially when several markings are being used in combination) is that the meanings and combinations give enough possibilities that very few drivers know (or are able to figure out) them all and are often unable to interpret their meaning.  Yes, I know that we are all expected and legally required to know road markings and how to drive based on them and we should refresh and update our knowledge continually throughout our driving careers.  No argument there.  However, if the markings and their meanings become complex to the point of most people not knowing them then, in practical terms, they are not serving their purpose.

There needs to be either better awareness, or simpler markings/definitions.  No disrespect to this channel, or any others, but the Govt. could really do more in getting its message out for this, and other issues (e.g. February 2022 Highway Code changes).  The good old public information broadcasts that taught many of us how to use a pelican crossing etc were effective.  I still remember them (and to take my brolly when it looks like rain).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dwNa7e877E

' More paint, more restraint'    is what I was taught.  But you have highlighted my need  to refamiliarise myself with the variable  markings I don't experience much of on my regular routes.  Thanks 🎉.

The thing I hate about British roads is the fact that you can have frequent changes of speed limit in a short stretch of road. Sometimes there will be a short stretch of dual carriageway with a crash barrier separation thrown in to allow you to travel at 70mph for less than a quarter of a mile. we have 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph limits - although I now notice many local authorities are replacing the ' national speed limit' signs  with 50mph signs,  because the national speed limit allows some vehicles to do only 50 and some to travel at 60 on the same stretch of road, so the authority chose the lower limit to avoid confusing people..

Thanks for posting this. I wasn't aware of the double white lines with hatch markings rule for overtaking pedestrians, cyclists, horses or road maintenance vehicles travelling at 10mph or less so  every day's a schoolday (I was already aware of when yiu can if there's just the solid white line on your side and often see that abused by peolle overtaking when the vehicle/cyclist is doing more than 10 mph or it's a tractor etc rather than the highway maintenance vehicle) . What would happen if there was a stationary vehicle blocking your route either just parked or maybe broken down opposite the double white lines with hatch markings then as that's not an emergency. I guess you could as the alternative would be just to sit there, which could be for hours!

14:16 "Happy days if everyone goes home safe". Brilliant. I'll try to remember that.

The DVSA examiner failed me while I was taking a coach driving test in an uphill scenario, with a cyclist on a narrow road with a solid double line riding his bike, and I couldn't overtake.
He told me that I could overtake him, but only if I drove below 20mph, which you can't do if you have a cyclist riding over 15mph.

Countless times I've been passed where double lines exist when on my moped doing 20mph+.

I agree with most of what you say but remember a double solid white line does not mean you cannot over take the highway code states you must not cross or straddle a solid white line
It is possible to overtake where there are solid white lines if the road is wide enough or if your vehicle is narrow enough (a motorbike for instance) to safely overtake without either crossing or straddling the sold white line

A brilliant and informative video. Thank you.

I know this road in Norwich Bor.
It's the one going through the Airport on the new ring road

Always treat these areas as if they are raised, so keep out. You can't go wrong. 😊😊😊

You did the correct thing on the solid double lines.

An excellent knowledge refresh thanks!
